Description
The Organization
Verite is an independent, non-profit social auditing, training and research organization established in 1995. Our mission is to ensure that people worldwide work under safe, fair and legal working conditions. We work to identify violations of workplace human rights and develop concrete steps to correct them through a combination of training for management and workers, education programs and remedial intervention.
Verite works with Fortune 500 corporations, workers, investors, governments, labor unions and advocacy groups internationally. We operate through a network of Regional Offices and NGO partners in over 60 countries throughout Asia, Latin America, Africa, the United States and Europe.
Our 2006 revenues were $2.6 million, a majority from earned income through contracts with private sector institutions. We have 17 US-based staff in Amherst, MA, Boston and Washington, DC; and approximately 50 staff and long-term consultants in China, Latin America, Europe, South Asia and Southeast Asia. The position is based in Amherst, MA at our headquarters, and will report to the Executive Director.
Verite seeks a creative and experienced individual to create and guide the implementation of a consistent and effective program of outreach and education for our supporters.
The Position
Verite seeks a Director of Development to shape and implement an outreach and fundraising strategy for our dynamic and entrepreneurial global organization. The Director will be expected to put in place an effective strategy that leads to sustained funding for key programs and which provides for consistent outreach to key clients and supporters.
The Director will have specific responsibility for Verite's fundraising programs, including major gift fundraising, foundation grants and special events. A successful Director will undertake short-term efforts to seize immediate opportunities and lay the groundwork for exciting larger efforts in the medium term.
Short-term priorities include funding from foundations and individual donors. Verite has received funding from foundations (including a 2007 Skoll Foundation Award for Social Entrepreneurship). There is potential to increase foundation funding through the implementation of a structured outreach program. Support from individual donors makes up a small portion of our overall revenues, and has not been a source of significant investment by the organization. Yet foundation and donor funding are particularly important to our organization as source of support for programs of particularly high impact.
In the longer-term we see the possibility of a membership program, and potential joint fundraising with institutional members of Verite's international network of partner organizations.
There is ample room for creativity in the position. The position calls for an innovative and skilled professional who has a strong connection to our mission, who is a self-starter, has strong organizational skills, is an excellent writer and can collaborate effectively. Experience with building or serving a broad organizational membership, and major event planning, are positives. Experience in an entrepreneurial organization is a plus. The Director will supervise a Development Associate and be supported by other staff for grant writing.
