Description

Come live, work and learn at Hawthorne Valley Farm, an established, diverse, certified Biodynamic/Organic farm in upstate New York. We're part of a non-profit association started in 1972 that includes farm-based education programs and a K-12 Waldorf school.

We are seeking an energetic person with people skills whose duties will include: attending 1 to 2 markets per week at Greenmarkets in New York City (these are very full days), participating in some of the "behind the scenes" work that makes for successful markets, harvesting some of the vegetables that will be sold the following day at market, and gaining knowledge of (through observation and/or work in) our organic dairy, bakery, sauerkraut cellar, greenhouse, and barn.

Our green market in NYC helps support our diverse Biodynamic farm which strives towards the Biodynamic ideal of a self-sufficient organism, creating its own animal feeds and compost.

In this position you'll develop an understanding of the business side of farming and local sustainable agriculture and gain marketing and leadership experience - while developing an overview of our farm and living in a vibrant community with diverse agricultural, educational, and artistic programs, approx. 2-1/2 hours north (by car) of New York City. Gain a practical understanding of how to bring food from a local farm to local tables, and interact with the wide range of people involved in making it happen.

Stipend/Compensation: Starts at $750/month with opportunities to increase over time as increased responsibilities are taken on. Workers Comp coverage provided plus private room in shared communal housing.

Start and End Dates: Starts in April or May (flexible), End Date Flexible (call to discuss)

Longer-term opportunities, with higher compensation and benefits, may develop.

To apply: send a letter of interest by email or call. We can discuss more details over the phone, and then we ask that interested folks schedule a time to visit the farm and interview in person.
