Description

Poverty, hunger, marginalization, exclusion and disempowerment have been commonplace coupled with improper use of livelihood resources and community assets. Entailing the ideas of empowering the poor and excluded a group of committed social workers founded GRASSROOTS INDIA TRUST. It is registered as a charity under Indian Trust Act.

GRASSROOTS INDIA TRUST aims to strengthen the capacities of the people at the grassroots by mainstreaming their local innovations into popular domains of development and social action.

Coordinated from New Delhi the organization works mostly in partnership of grassroots NGOs and action groups. Grassroots India Trust principally builds the capacities of participants/ people by imparting on-field training, information, technical know-how and orientation apart from little monetary support, which is a sustainable way of empowering the communities and partners in a bid to overcome hunger, poverty, exclusion, marginalization and abuse of human rights.

Grassroots India Trust apart from supporting the grassroots NGOs in many provinces of North India also executes empowerment-related activities through its family organs: Grassroots Media Initiative, Grassroots Institute, GRASSROOTSSPEAK south asia, GRASSROOTS COMMUNITY and GRASSROOTS-in-action.

Altogether, the Bastar is known for traditional crafts and artifacts. Saathi sanstha, the partner organization of GIT, has intensively worked between the artisan communities for last 12 years.

Over a decade ago three companions took training of ceramics and went Bastar on their practical training. Later they settled right there and started organizing artisan communities (e.g. Kumhar, Lohar, Carpenters, etc.) and brought in gradual changes in the indigenous technology and methodology of artifact making. Major changes they brought in were in the design of various artifacts, production of material matching standards of international market, taught the communities about techniques of marketing their products, and the technology of producing the artifacts.

The above efforts of Saathi have placed a revolution among the artisan communities in Bastar region. As an organization, Saathi also got popularity as well as space all over the world particularly in Europe. Whenever someone talks about craft of Bastar, one cannot forget the name of Saathi.
