The Conservation Law Foundation (CLF), New England's leading environmental advocacy group, has an immediate opening for an experienced environmental lawyer with strong advocacy, leadership, development and communications skills to direct its New Hampshire Advocacy Center.
Founded in 1966, CLF works to protect New England's natural resources and promote healthy communities for its people. CLF's New Hampshire Advocacy Center addresses a range of environmental challenges through high-impact legal interventions and policy reform initiatives. The New Hampshire Advocacy Center is one of five advocacy centers operated by CLF; other centers are located in Maine, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Vermont.
The Director will work directly on high-visibility advocacy initiatives and will play the lead role in strengthening and expanding CLF's base of financial support in New Hampshire. The Director will supervise the work of two full-time staff attorneys, a full-time office manager, and legal volunteers based in CLF's downtown Concord office. In addition, the Director will be responsible for enhancing CLF's media coverage in New Hampshire (together with CLF's Director of Communications); representing CLF at public functions; and managing office operations.
The Director will work as part of the senior staff team to create and implement innovative and effective strategies in the following areas:
Leadership of CLF's New Hampshire advocacy, building strong, focused state and local interventions and ensuring that these interventions advance CLF's region-wide strategic priorities in areas such as water resources protection, clean energy/climate change, and smart growth.
Management of CLF's efforts to expand the circle of financial support for the New Hampshire Advocacy Center, including outreach to present and potential individual donors, cultivation of foundation support, and expansion of CLF's membership.
Direct intervention on selected high-profile advocacy cases with significant strategic impact.
Close cooperation with CLF's New Hampshirestate advisory board, which meets bimonthly to help guide state-level advocacy, monitor Advocacy Center finances and operations, and advance CLF's development efforts.
Effective outreach to the New Hampshiremedia and representation of CLF at public hearings, conferences and other public forums.
Desired qualifications and skills include:
Practicing attorney with at least 8-10 years' experience and demonstrated excellence in environmental advocacy.
High level of self-motivation, strong leadership skills and a demonstrated professional commitment to environmental protection.
Proven success in fundraising for the non-profit sector and a willingness to devote priority attention to enhancing the financial standing of CLF's New HampshireAdvocacy Center.
Direct experience in dealing with New Hampshire's legal system, public policy and politics.
Strong managerial and interpersonal skills, applicable to the operation of the New Hampshire Advocacy Center as well as the integration of that Center into CLF's organization-wide operations.
Excellent public speaking and writing skills.
Self-sufficiency in carrying out word-processing and other functions required of a small office with modest resources.
Willingness and ability to attend in-state evening meetings and events as needed, and to travel to CLF's Boston office for monthly management meetings as well as for occasional meetings and presentations before CLF's board of trustees, supporters and regional staff.
