Description
The Camp Director is responsible for designing, launching, and overseeing the Headlands Institute's new summer camp, including setting its curricular direction, establishing key partnerships, marketing the program, and hiring and training camp staff. This person will lay the groundwork for a successful first season in the summer of 2007 and will be the point person for staff, board, parents, and campers both before and during the camp season.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
* Leads all aspects of design and implementation of HI's new summer camp
* Sets an innovative and differentiated curricular agenda for camp, including developing mission-driven programs, age-appropriate thematic strands, and exciting hands-on activities
* Initiates and develops key camp partnerships, including establishing Memoranda of Understanding with partner groups
* Acquires the necessary teaching supplies and gear for a successful summer camp
* Recruits, hires, trains, and evaluates summer camp staff, including (but not limited to) Assistant Camp Director, key specialists, and camp counselors
* Runs the daily operations of camp and works easily with both children and parents
* Ensures compliance with all HI and park risk management practices
* Represents HI's summer camp at HI and YNI board meetings, seasonal fairs and exhibits; periodically attends camp-related conferences
* Supports the development of camp marketing tools, including but not limited to brochures, website, booths, and public service announcements
* Initiates, supports, and finalizes HI's accreditation process before January 2007
* Establishes and oversees online camp registration systems
* Designs and leads periodic parent interface events, such as open houses
* Creates, monitors, and reconciles camp budget of approximately $85K
EXPERIENCE, COMPETENCIES AND EDUCATION:
* Four-year college degree (Master's degree a plus);
* At least two full years experience running a children's camp and additional years of experience working with youth of varied ages in an outdoor or experiential setting (Experience launching new ventures a plus);
* Possession of (or willingness to acquire) current Wilderness First Responder and adult/child/infant CPR certifications;
* Sense of humor; creative; playful;
* Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal; ability to build and sustain a high energy camp environment for staff, campers, and their families;
* An independent thinker and a team-player: innovative, willing to try new things;
* Strong leadership, supervisory, and mentoring skills; ability to lead a team of up to 10 seasonal employees (in year 1)
* Demonstrated success in sales, marketing, problem-solving and customer service;
* Demonstrated ability to manage large budgets and communicate regular financial updates to decision-making bodies.
* Experience developing curricula, leading trainings, and evaluating programmatic success;
* Experience working within the educational framework and operational structure of an existing organization, or willingness to do so;
* Sophisticated understanding of the learner at different ages, of group identity development, and of thematic teaching;
* Demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks and timelines in a team setting.
COMPENSATION: Annual salary between $38,000 - $41,000, commensurate with experience. Excellent benefits package, including: medical; dental; paid sick, vacation, and holidays; and 403b retirement plan (with employee match after year 1).
