Job Summary:
A Mountain Classroom - Increasing student's understanding of the natural world and their relationship to it!
Supervised jointly by two Program Coordinators, Environmental Education Instructors teach ecology lessons using experiential activities to middle and high school students during multi-day courses. Roadside facilities are used year-around for student lodging and in the spring and fall, instructors may also lead students on overnight hikes to AMC backcountry huts. As a hiking-based program, instructors managing groups so team building is an inherent counterpart to academic learning.
Job Responsibilities:
- Instruct environmental education lessons on watershed, forest and alpine ecology, map & compass, sensory awareness, group initiatives, etc. Teach minimum impact hiking and trip preparedness. Winter curriculum includes meteorology, winter ecology, tracking, snowshoeing and animal adaptations to cold.
- Prepare environmental education lessons based on modules provided by the AMC.
- Program creatively, independently and continually during a course. Eat dinner and lunch with students and maintain a presence during the entire course. Organize and teach evening programs.
- Keep equipment and supplies in clean and working order. Perform logistics functions on a rotating basis with coworkers. Provide logistics support for coworker's programs; including: driving groups, food requisition and prep, gear depot cleaning, welcoming and organizing schools at the facility.
- Logistics support role is also a back up instructor for sick or injured coworkers (on-call type role).
- Lead groups of about 10 students on one to five day overnight trips to AMC backcountry huts in the White Mountains.
- Responsible for trip logistics including gear, food, vehicles, etc.
- Carry a backpack daily, which holds teaching and emergency supplies (approximately 30 lbs).
- Responsible for the safety of students in the backcountry. Make independent leadership decisions.
Job Qualifications:
Education: Undergraduate degree in natural science or environmental/outdoor education.
Experience: Previous experience teaching environmental/outdoor education and a sincere interest in working with youth. Familiarity with the White Mountains and knowledge of New England natural history is helpful. Backpacking experience and a working knowledge of outdoor skills.
Certifications: Wilderness First Responder or Wilderness First Aid with CPR, valid license.
Start: Winter: Mid-January through March. Spring: Mid-April to Mid-June. Fall: Late August to mid-November. May be combined with a summer position leading teen wilderness treks or adult workshops.
Salary: $315.00/week. Room and board available for $45.00/week.
