ABOUT THE SEED FOUNDATION: The SEED Foundation was created in 1997 to establish college preparatory urban boarding schools that prepare children, both academically and socially, for success in college and in the professional world beyond. In 1998, the Foundation launched The SEED School of Washington, DC - the nation's first urban public boarding school. The School currently serves 310 students in grades 7-12, and graduated its first senior class in June 2004. Completing the campus and ensuring sustainable operations for The SEED School is a victory for students and families in Washington, DC, and a springboard for the Foundation to examine opportunities to open similar schools in other cities. The SEED Foundation is committed to the continued success of The SEED School of Washington, DC, and to providing other innovative opportunities for children throughout the nation.
The Director of Campus Operations is a critical member of the SEED School management team. The Director will ensure a safe and inspiring boarding school environment to prepare urban students for success in college. Strong candidates will have facilities management experience, passionate support of The SEED School mission, and an extraordinary commitment to excellence.
Responsibilities
* Provide senior leadership on campus operations.
* Create and manage annual and long-term budgets for: capital improvements, maintenance, dining services, security and cleaning. Communicate all campus operations related matters to the school community. Coordinate timely response and resolution of staff/parent/student work requests. Work closely with the School's Treasurer and the Finance Committee, to ensure close monitoring of the campus facility operations. Give monthly updates to Assistant Head of School and Chief Financial Officer. Participate in monthly SEED Council meetings, clearly communicating the School's campus operations realities to the senior team. Support campus events and facility use. Collaborate with School and Foundation staff to design and support future SEED schools.
* Direct Campus Facility Operations: physical plant and landscaping for 165,000 square feet in 4 buildings and grounds on 4-acres campus.
* Manage, coach and train facilities staff. Coordinate staggered on-campus and on-call schedules to cover the campus continuously. Strategic analysis: Life Cycle Analysis, cost-savings, capital improvements planning, manage utility costs and savings programs. Coordinate preventative maintenance, including yearly schedule and weekly walkthroughs. Ensure compliance with applicable building code, life-safety regulations and environmental laws. Work with Head of School to assign office and living space. Coordinate space check out, repairs, moves. Manage planning and execution of all campus maintenance and improvement projects.
* Manage Dining Services and Housekeeping Services (Contract).
* Manage USDA breakfast and lunch program compliance monitoring and filings. Negotiate and monitor contracts.
* Direct Campus Security Operations.
* Manage, coach and train security staff. Manage security contractor, scheduling, training. Oversee key and key card policies and issuance.
* Direct Campus Transportation Logistics, including scheduling, vehicle maintenance, use policy and replacement.
* Manage campus procurement and service contracts, including copiers, furniture, equipment and office supplies.
* Direct facility life-safety and emergency planning.
* Maintain all operations-related files.
* Participate in school activities, training and meetings as requested by Head of School. Serve as Administrator on Duty and lunch monitor.
Qualifications
* Extensive knowledge of facilities maintenance, preventative maintenance and construction approaches
* Strong knowledge of construction documents, ideally including architectural or engineering training
* Excellent problem solving and analysis
* At least 5 years management experience in a school or other business, including experience managing a team of direct reports, working closely with a senior administrative team and working closely with a board
* Experience negotiating and managing contracts and subcontractors
* Environmental awareness and strong understanding of green building and energy conservation tools and techniques.
* Spirit of collaboration and team work.
