Description
State fish wildlife agencies have a long tradition of leadership in bird conservation.
Along with other conservation agencies and organizations, the state fish and
wildlife agencies have developed national and international bird conservation
plans including the Partners in Flight Continental Plan, U.S. Shorebird
Conservation Plan, and the North American Waterbird Conservation Plan.
The International Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies is seeking an
experienced individual to assist state fish and wildlife agencies with the
implementation of bird conservation activities identified in these plans. Working
closely with IAFWA's North American Waterfowl Plan coordinator and
IAFWA's Wildlife Diversity director, this person will provide support to the state
agencies in stepping down biological objectives to the state level and help state
agencies to incorporate the bird conservation plans in their comprehensive
wildlife conservation plans. Additionally, this position is the key IAFWA liaison
with these bird initiatives for state wildlife agencies and will coordinate and
communicate the interest of states in these conservation alliances.
The International Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies is a
quasi-governmental organization focusing on fish and wildlife conservation issues.
Duties:
- Assist state fish and wildlife agencies with the initiation, development, and
implementation of state bird conservation programs; - Coordinate bird conservation workshops, meetings, and training activities,
as needed; - Coordinate with the leadership teams of state, national, and international
bird conservation initiatives to encourage mutually supportive efforts; - Serve as the IAFWA subject matter expert on the Neotropical Migratory
Bird Conservation Act and advise state agency leaders on related issues; - Coordinate with other bird conservation interests among the federal
agencies, non-governmental organizations, and industry partners; - Raise public awareness of the need for greater funding support for bird
conservation and explore new funding opportunities; - Provide staff support to the IAFWA President in his capacity as a leader
in the North American Bird Conservation Initiative, as well as to the chairs
of the Partners in Flight and Shorebird/Waterbird working groups of the
IAFWA Bird Conservation Committee; and - Represent the IAFWA on national committees involving migratory bird
conservation including the U.S. Shorebird Council and Partners in Flight
Management Steering Committee.
Qualifications:
- Degree in wildlife management, zoology, biology, or other similar field; an
advanced degree is desirable; - Excellent writing/editing skills; keen attention to detail;
- Demonstrated ability to deal perceptively and communicate effectively
(verbal and written) with a diverse array of people and institutions; - Demonstrated ability to work productively, both independently and as part
of a team; - Demonstrated interest in and commitment to the conservation of wildlife;
- Knowledge of U.S. birds and their habitats a plus; and
- Willingness to travel frequently.
Compensation:
This position will be located in the IAFWA office in Washington D.C. Salary and
benefits will be based upon qualifications. State fish and wildlife agency personnel
are encouraged to apply as a "detail" to the IAFWA. Two years of funding is
available for this and additional funding will be sought for future years.
