Description

Environment and Industry Internship at the Great Lakes Field Office of
the National Wildlife Federation. The National Wildlife Federation (NWF) has one part-time (20 hour/week)
internship available starting immediately, for 16 weeks, in our Ann
Arbor office.

Duties:

As part of its campaign to achieve phase outs of mercury emissions in
the Great Lakes states, the NWF is seeking an intern to work with NWF
staff to further investigate the economic, technical, and industrial
impacts of toxics reduction. In particular, the intern will research
and draft a report that calculates the total cost of a phase out of
mercury emissions in Ohio. Researching the report will require
identifying major emissions sources, reviewing pollution prevention and
pollution control options available to major emitting industries, and
calculating the costs of implementing the P2 or pollution control
actions necessary to reach 90% or greater mercury emissions reduction.

NWF has already performed a similar analysis for the state of Michigan,
so the intern will be able to use existing methodology, but will likely
need to do some original investigation to adapt this methodology to
Ohio. Improvements to the methodology and approach will also be very
welcome within the time constraints of the project.

The intern also will work with NWF staff, state agency staff and
others, to fine-tune inventories of mercury emissions sources.

Qualifications:

A bachelor's degree in environmental science, natural
resources, environmental engineering, environmental economics or related
field. Progress toward graduate degree and/or environmental work
experience is preferred and a background which combines experience in
the environmental sciences and pollution prevention with economics
and/or business will be helpful. Experience with spreadsheet programs
and sound communication skills essential. . NWF is an equal opportunity
employer and strongly encourages applications from people of diverse
backgrounds, women, people of color, people of all sexual identities,
people with disabilities. Needs-based relocation stipend may be
available for those who have experience working within or advocating on
behalf of communities traditionally under-represented including, but not
limited to Native American, Latino, African American and Asian American
communities. To inquire, send an e-mail to Aline Brito at
internopp@nwf.org.

Internship pay is $8.00/hr (work study at higher rate is possible).
Deadline for applying is March 21, 2003, or until suitable candidates
are identified. The internship will start by March 24.
