Description

Background:

HawkWatch International (HWI) is one of the premier raptor conservation organizations in North America. HWI monitors and protects hawks, eagles, other birds of prey and their environments through research, education, and conservation programs. HWI is a non-profit organization with headquarters in Salt Lake City and an office in Albuquerque. HWI's science program focuses on long-term research and monitoring of raptor populations, emphasizing western North America. HWI and its partners coordinate 16 long-term migration research projects in 10 states and Mexico, an extensive nest-survey program in Utah, and collaborate on a variety of other raptor research and monitoring projects. HWI's conservation program focuses on reducing threats to raptors, including power line electrocutions, lead poisoning, and habitat loss/degradation. Its environmental education programs reach over 40,000 people each year in classrooms and at field sites. HWI has an annual budget of approximately $1.3 million and employs eleven staff.

Approximately 70 seasonal field biologists, 5-6 interns, and scores of volunteers are also involved in working toward our mission. Membership is approximately 1,800 households, located throughout the U.S.


Duties:

HawkWatch International is seeking an Executive Director responsible for the management of personnel, finances, and development efforts, and overseeing implementation of research, conservation, educational, and membership programs.

A skilled administrator is sought to work in a team-oriented environment with staff, board, volunteers, and partners, and to guide the organization in achieving its long-term goals.

Competitive compensation package offered. The current Executive Director will depart in January 2003 and will assist in training and transition.

Qualifications:

  • At least 3 years decision-making responsibilities in personnel and organizational management, including budgeting and financial management.
  • Demonstrated commitment to natural science, conservation, or environmental issues.
  • Proven fundraising experience.
  • Demonstrated success at building and leading effective teams.
  • Effective written and oral communication skills.

Additional preferred selection criteria:

  • Nonprofit management experience, preferably with a membership organization.
  • Knowledge of office technology and its applications.
  • Evidence of respect from peers and colleagues.
  • Advanced degree in a relevant discipline.
