Description of Position:
As Center Director of the Great Lakes Science Center (GLSC), the incumbent is responsible for the management of a
broad, multi-disciplinary program of biological research, inventory and
monitoring, and information management. As a member of the Regional Director's senior management team, the incumbent is responsible for the planning, coordination and implementation of natural resource
partnerships with States, tribes, other Federal agencies, academic institutions and private groups interested in the status and management of biological resources. He/she supervises Center staff and provides leadership and guidance to senior scientists, field station leaders,
large vessel crews and captains, administrative officers, project
leaders, etc. in planning, staffing, budgeting for, and coordinating the
Center's programs. He/she is responsible for certifying the overall scientific merit of the Center's programs and for overseeing consistent application of Department and Bureau policy regarding safety, fair employment, equal opportunity and training. As the Director of this
nationally and internationally recognized Center, the incumbent plans, coordinates, executes, and manages broad research programs related to fisheries biology and ecology, large lake fish community stock
assessment, contaminants, non-indigenous species biology, and coastal and wetland ecology.
The incumbent supports and enhances
multidisciplinary science and integration of scientific activities and
approaches within the Center, and among other Centers, Regions, and
agency programs. The Center Director is a key member of the international coalition of fishery scientists and represents the Bureau and the Department in many technical meetings related to management of the aquatic resources of the Great Lakes. Research findings of the GLSC
are pivotal for Federal, State, and Tribal resource management agency functions as well as for the international Great Lakes Fishery Commission. Travel, transportation, and relocation expenses are authorized for this position and WILL be paid by the Federal Government.
