Supervisor: Communications Director

Status: Non-exempt, full time, hourly

Compensation: $14.50/hour

Deadline: May 28, 2002

Position Summary:

RAN's website www.ran.org is a primary tool for mobilizing and communicating with our campaign partners and supporters and for educating the public about RAN and its current campaigns. The Web Producer is responsible for maintaining a current, well designed website that is user-friendly, attractive, and interactive. The Web Producer is also responsible for continually improving RAN's Internet outreach and mobilization ability and effectiveness. Insuring that RAN and each campaign is using the website and Internet strategically, creatively and effectively to promote campaign events and maintain RAN's leadership in digital campaigning is a critical component of the position. The Web Producer is responsible for increasing RAN's use of images and video on the site. The Web Producer is the primary decision-maker on content, layout, and site architecture. The Web Producer is also responsible for maintaining and developing RAN's secondary websites, www.rainforest.org and www.thisiscitigroup.org . The Web Producer is a member of the Communications team, and works directly with the Campaigns and Development teams.

Job performance for this role will be measured by follow-through on the above requirements, increasing RAN's Internet presence (hits/visits/sites, etc. per month, stickiness, and site popularity), and effectively mobilizing allies and supporters (number of emails/faxes to campaign targets). Keeping the site updated is of the utmost importance.

Responsibilities and Priorities:

Update RAN's sites daily for each campaign and team

Consistently improve sites through creative, strategic ideas

Generate interest in RAN and its campaigns through a compelling, interactive website

Insure RAN's website effectively keeps supporters and allies interested in the organization and provides them with a sense of participation in RAN and its activities

Generate participation in RAN's events through effective website outreach to activists and public

Aid campaigners in using the site and related technologies effectively and creatively through strategic counsel that helps them reach their goals

Constantly develop and execute ideas that will improve the sites and campaign efforts

Provide Web support necessary for Campaigns and Development Teams' activities to succeed

Improve and increase use of video and images on the website

Stay current with emerging and cutting-edge technology and political/advocacy uses. Maintain RAN's position as a leader in NGO web activism; experiment regularly with new ideas and uses for the Web.

Attend technology conferences and act as a RAN spokesperson as needed

Report regularly to the Campaigns Team on the effectiveness of RAN's websites as communication and advocacy tool

Maintain complete financial documentation of all activities and adhere to approved budget

Report to Communications Director regularly on accomplishments and plans of action

Participate in Quarterly Performance Reviews with Communications Director as well as weekly Campaign Team Meetings

Participate in organizational decision-making affecting the website(s)

Assist in maintaining RAN image archives

Write and edit website content as needed

Organizational Responsibilities:

Participate in RAN's organizational planning and training sessions

Participate in weekly RAN staff and campaign meetings

Share office responsibilities to maintain a healthy and safe workplace

Contribute to campaign success as appropriate during external activities

Education: Bachelor (BA, BS, etc.)

Languages: English

General Qualifications:

Excellent written, verbal, and electronic communication skills

Strong design sense

Organization skills and ability to prioritize multiple projects

In-depth understanding and knowledge of emerging or cutting edge Web technology

Demonstrated Web-savvy

Web production experience

Commitment to RAN's campaigns and mission

Ability to work with staff when they are on the road

Desired Technical Qualifications:

Experience with, or ability to learn quickly and thoroughly:

Macromedia Dreamweaver

HTML

Web design and publishing

Flash

Photoshop and Image Ready

Acrobat

Video compression/streaming software and protocols

Database programs such as PHP

Knowledge of MySQL, Javascript, Perl a plus
