Position Summary:


Rainforest Action Network (RAN) works to protect the worlds rainforests and the rights of their inhabitants through education, grassroots organizing, and non-violent direct action. RAN is guided by the firm belief that continued destruction of the worlds last remaining old growth forests is both immoral and unnecessary, and that a mature, modern society has outgrown such practices. Our programs operate hard-hitting campaigns designed to challenge extractive industries to phase out destructive operations in old growth forests and to reverse our progress towards worsening climate change. RAN has enjoyed a string of victories in the logging and banking sectors, and has been dubbed by the Wall St. Journal as some of the most effective environmental agitators in the business.


The Development Director is a senior level position responsible for leading a five person fundraising department to the goal of securing an annual budget of $2+ million. Responsibilities include: researching and writing foundation proposals; coordinating events; supervising membership, major donor, business membership programs; developing reports; creating and implementing systems. Knowledge of endowment campaign development, planned giving, and long-term strategic planning helpful. Management functions include working closely with the Board of Directors, participating as a member of the Senior Management Team, developing an annual fundraising budget and workplan, and coordinating all fundraising activities.


Specific Duties Include:

  1. Management and Coordination
    1. Develop annual revenue plan for the organization in conjunction with Executive Director and development department staff, as well as monthly cash flow projections;
    2. Work with development department staff to develop annual plans and budgets to meet overall goals;
    3. Supervise, and provide leadership and support for staff of four;
    4. Coordinate development activities with staff and board. Coordinate Board Development Committee.
    5. Represent development department as part of Senior Management Team.
  2. Raise funds from individuals, businesses and foundations, in conjunction with team
    1. Help develop, oversee and execute major donor campaign to include existing and new donors by enlisting support of RAN board members and key supporters;
    2. Solicit funds, in-kind gifts and donations of proceeds from the business sector.
    3. Work with Foundations Manager to develop grant proposals and oversee the solicitation of foundations and grant administration;
    4. Manage direct mail and telemarketing campaigns and staff.
  3. Raise funds from Special Events
    1. Manage RAN-sponsored special events such as the annual dinner, house parties, concert events, etc.
    2. Oversee other fundraising events that are not produced by RAN such as concerts and other events managed by outside sources.
  4. Special Projects and New Opportunities
    1. Seek out and screen new fundraising opportunities to take advantage of new opportunities;
    2. Work with key staff to develop a RAN annual report;
    3. Oversee, coordinate and diversify funding base from other sources, such as licensing agreements;
    4. Develop under utilized funding sources such as planned giving and strategize for such midterm goals as a successful capital campaign;
    5. Keep informed of new funding venues, particularly tree-free methods.
  5. Organizational Responsibilities
    1. Participate in RANs organizational planning and training sessions;
    2. Participate in weekly RAN staff and development department meetings;
    3. Share office responsibilities to maintain a healthy and safe workplace;
    4. Contribute to RANs campaign successes as appropriate.
