Description

The Environmental Support Center (ESC) helps strengthen local, state and regional environmental groups through programs in organizational assistance, technology resources, workplace solicitation, a loan fund and the State Environmental Leadership Program. ESC gives highest priority to assisting groups involved in advocacy activities, those with modest resources and those serving and involving low-income people and/or people of color.

The Technology Resources Program (TRP) of ESC has historically involved either donation of computers, printers, fax machines, modems, software and training on their use or training on the use of computers as communications tools in certain regions of the United States. A new phase in the program is being initiated which will involve providing on site assistance to grassroots environmental justice and environmental organizations in the Southeastern states of Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana and Mississippi and in the Southwestern states of Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico and Utah to enable them to use technology to improve the achievement of their environmental missions.

The Technology Resources Program Manager will be based in the Washington, DC offices of ESC and will engage in circuit riding with approximately two dozen organizations in the Southeast. The Manager will recruit, hire and supervise another staff person who will provide direct service to a similar number of organizations from a base in the Southwest.

JOB DESCRIPTION

A full time Manager is needed to oversee all aspects of the Technology Resources Program and to directly conduct portions of the program. Major responsibilities include:
* in cooperation with the Executive Director and the Director of Programs, developing and implementing a system for selecting participant organizations for each region
*
developing a planning format for participant organizations to enable them to create plans for using technology to achieve their environmental missions
*
working on site, by email and telephone to assist the Southeastern participant organizations in the development of individual technology plans
*
providing on site and distance training and advice to enable the Southeastern participant organizations to implement their individual technology plans including basic databases, accounting, word processing, spread sheets, geographic information systems and the Internet
*
administering the fund for hardware and software to assist both Southeastern and Southwestern participants through subsidizing purchases and limited direct donation
*
assisting Southeastern participant organizations in developing local support systems of volunteers with technology expertise
*
recruiting, hiring and supervising the circuit rider for the Southwest
*
providing assistance to the Director of Development and Marketing in the preparation of proposals and reports to funders of dollars, equipment and services
*
advising the ESC Board of Directors and staff on the progress of the program and making recommendations about the future of the program
*
referring Southeastern participant organizations to other ESC programs and similar capacity building resources

QUALIFICATIONS
College graduate who combines solid technical knowledge with the demonstrated ability to work with grassroots nonprofit organizations. Ability to communicate information about a wide array of computer-based technologies clearly and accurately to diverse groups of people is essential. Must have experience in training. Ability to troubleshoot, frequently from a remote location is a must. Familiarity with computer hardware and software systems, both Intel-based and Apple, is essential as is familiarity with the practical use of a wide range of communications technologies, especially electronic mail, local area networks and the World Wide Web, including web site construction and maintenance. Experience in supervising staff is desirable. Familiarity with the SE environmental justice and environmental communities a plus. Ability and willingness to travel is fundamental.

SALARY AND STARTING DATE
The salary range for this position is from $45,000 to $50,000 and will depend upon qualifications. Generous benefits include health, dental and disability insurance, pension, vacation and sick leave.
