Position Overview
We are seeking candiates for the position of "Colorlines Reporter, Climate Justice." This position will be engaged in ongoing monitoring of climate justice beat and major stories including those assigned by Editorial Director. This role reports to the Editorial Director.
Responsibilities
- Keeps editorial team informed about developments in this beat week to week and recommends when new coverage is required
- Produces and pitches reported news features. News features will be reported and written on tight deadlines. Goal is three features per month, but volume will vary depending on other assignments and shifting editorial strategies
- Pitches and contributes reporting for multimedia and graphic features
- Pitches ideas for and produces daily blog posts as needed, including but not limited to coverage of climate justice. Posts may include both digested content and original reporting
- Pitches and produces investigative and enterprise features as time permits and pursues at least one project per year. Reporter may work in partnership with Research Department on larger investigative projects, depending on organizational priorities and editorial strategy
- Travels nationally for reporting, conferences or other events as needed
- Represents Colorlines through media and public appearances as necessary, in coordination with the Marketing & Communications Department and as assigned/approved by editors
- Represents Colorlines as a reporter and analyst in social media, both in an individual account and when needed through organizational accounts
- Participates in Race Forward's organization-wide program planning and evaluation
Qualifications
Skills and Attributes:
- At least three years experience producing original writing and reporting on deadline, at least five years work experience in the climate justice field
- Strong writing skills
- The ability to produce clean, accurate copy on a tight timeline
- Ability to apply a national lens to local stories
- Strong current base of sources in climate justice field
- Deep knowledge of racial, economic and gender organizing and debates in climate change, climate justice and environmental justice fields
- Computer literate and able to engage robustly in varying social media platforms
- Good communication skills and ability to work with diverse people/constituencies
- Self-motivated and responsible
- Sense of humor, creativity, energy and enthusiasm
- An independent worker who does well with a small-but-dedicated team
- Photo, video and/or audio experience desirable
- Photoshop experience desirable
Physical Requirements:
- Requires sitting, talking/listening and keying at a computer for 6+ hours per day
- Moving, standing, climbing, balancing, bending and reaching with arms and hands up for up to 3 hours a day
- Lifting up to 20 lbs. Exposure to electromagnetic resonance (EMR)
Compensation: The full-time salary for this position is between $55,000-65,000 annualized. In addition, we offer an excellent benefits package, including health and dental insurance, flexible spending account, retirement plan, transportation stipend, paid vacation, and a sabbatical.
