Youth Programs Manager, Park Stewardship Program

Position Overview 

Are you passionate about working with youth, building community and restoring open space?

We are looking for an individual who is excited about engaging local youth in service, learning, experiential education and leadership experiences in the Golden Gate National Parks.

The Park Stewardship Program connects, engages and sustains local community members in the restoration and care of parklands within the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.

The Youth Stewardship Program Manager is responsible for the successful development and implementation of programs that introduce and engage local youth to the Park and surrounding open space. Working with interns and as part of the Stewardship Team, the Coordinator works to expand hands-on service learning opportunities develop adventure trips for students to park sites, provide lessons in experiential learning, develop leadership workshops and create other activities which encourage a connection to, and appreciation of, parks, open space and natural resources.

Responsibilities  

Description of Duties: 

• Supervise, mentor and train 1-3 youth development interns.
• Develop, organize and facilitate service-learning, volunteer and experiential education programs for youth. This includes: develop programming and run school year service-learning and experiential education programs for youth groups throughout the Park in collaboration with Park Stewardship, Nurseries, Trails, the Crissy Field Center, and other internal partners.
• Manage the planning and implementation of the LINC Summer High School Programs.
• Manage and facilitate the Oceana High School Nursery Program. Organize and guide weekly events and offer special courses for the annual interim week.
• Lead programming to engage Marin City Youth in adjacent parklands. Link up with programming offered at the new Rocky Graham Park, and with the Park Prescriptions pilot program.
• Serve as official liaison to both NOLS (the National Outdoor Leadership School) and Outward Bound. Facilitate scholarships and guide youth through process.
• Assist Trails Stewardship Manager with outreach, organization, and facilitation of the Teens on Trails program.
• Plan special field trips to expand appreciation of public lands. These might include a behind the scenes tour of Alcatraz, an underground tour of Battery Townsley or a sailing experience with the Maritime Park.
• Sustain existing, and develop new, internal and external educational partnerships.
• Use social media to reach out to and engage youth participants.
• Collect data to support evaluation, tracking and fundraising efforts.
• Actively build a network of partners and offer programming in local underserved communities, specifically low income communities and communities of color.
• Manage budget and help develop grant requests.
• Develop annual youth summary report.
• Develop and deliver interpretive talks, classroom presentations and materials as needed.
• Engage park visitors on site, communicate about park issues and educate the public about youth and opportunities.
• When appropriate, attend NPS events, community events, and professional conferences. Share relevant findings with the rest of Park Stewardship staff.
• Develop a working relationship, and attend meetings with internal Conservancy and NPS staff, and other internal and external youth program leaders.

Qualifications

• Demonstrated ability to effectively inspire, lead and motivate diverse youth audiences. 
• Strong commitment to youth participation and stewardship in parks and open space.
• Strong knowledge of environmental and social issues, especially those issues affecting the Bay Area.
• Experience leading experiential education and service-learning programs for youth in the outdoors.
• Knowledge of ecology, restoration, and natural resource management a plus.
• Ability to make connections between the urban and natural environment and make education relevant to diverse audiences.
• Creative, energetic and self-motivated, ability to take initiative and recognize what needs to be done.
• Strong organizational and group management skills.
• Enjoy working outdoors in all kinds of weather and site conditions.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Friendly, welcoming and outgoing personality.
• Desire to work in a team and to work with a diversity of people with different backgrounds, ethnicities, genders, sexualities, ages and viewpoints.
• Bilingual skills a plus.
• Proficiency with Microsoft office and Google products.
• Ability to obtain a Class B License (requires a valid California Driver's license and excellent driving record), and comfort driving a 12 - 15 passenger van.
• Ability to work Saturdays and attend overnights trips (6-7 per year). Frequent local travel will be necessary (vehicle provided).

Compensation: This is a full time, benefited position. Compensation for this position will be commensurate with work experience, skills, and educational background with a range between $48K - 57K per year. Primary office is in San Francisco.
