Description

The Minnesota Conservation Corps (MCC), a non-profit environmental-service organization, is currently accepting applications for crew member and leader positions. 

Position Overview: 

Crews of 4 members each will participate in on-the-job training to learn natural-resource management and youth-development skills and complete environmental restoration projects, leading groups of high school students.  MCC AmeriCorps members' team-oriented work is often physically challenging, almost exclusively outdoors and may involve camping for several days at a time.  Members gain professional and job skills and netweork with natural resource professionals.

Responsibilities:

Crew members will receive training and complete various education and conservation projects.  Service hours are split between leading groups of youth in education, training, and hands-on environmental restoration and conducting natural resource projects with fellow crew members.  Projects include tree planting, prairie restoration, streambank stabalization, GPS/GIS mapping, wildlife surveys, carpentry/construction, timber-stand improvement, lakeshore restoration, erosion control, environmental education, trail construction and maintenance, exotic species management, wildlife habitat improvement, and emergency response.

Crew leaders will be resonsible for project management, training and development of up to 4 crew members.  The crew leader is responsible for the crew's overall work performance and safety during the projects.  Crew leaders work directly with crew members to complete all projects.

Qualifications:

-Ability to work outdoors in adverse conditions and on challenging terrain.
-Ability to work with diverse groups of youth in conservation, education and recreation settings.
Ability to foster strong work habits, environmental ethics, youth leadership and team unity.
Ability to work well with others in a team setting.
Strong desire to learn new skills.
Positive attitude and interest in service and community work.
-Sense of adventure.

Crew Leaders (in addition to member qualifications):

-Prior field and/or supervisory experience is preferred.
-Experience and/or education in natural resource management, youth development, supervision, construction, small engine repair and/or related fields is desired.

Requirements: 

Must be 18-25 years old and able to perform essential functions of the job including physicall strenous work 40 hours per week.  The work schedule changes seasonally; spring and fall are 5-day work weeks, summer is a 4-day work week.  Crew members and leaders should be available for weeklong out-of-town assignments that involve camping near project sites.  A full term of service must be completed to receive an education award.  Personnal protective equipment is provided and required.

Compensation:  MCC crew members will receive a living stipend of $1140 a month (crew leaders: $1550), health insurance, student loan forbearance during the service term, and a post-service AmeriCorps Education Award for $4725 that may be used for college expenses or to repay qualified student loans. 

Corps members will also have the opportunity to explore career options within the environmental field and to complete a week-long service project of their choosing.

Timeline:  Applicants are encouraged to submit by November 30 (crew leader position) or December 19 (crew member postion).
