This position is in partnership with the Northwest Service Academy (NWSA), an AmeriCorps program of ESD112. NWSA's mission is to preserve and restore the natural environment, and to develop community leaders through service and community partnerships.
Project Sponsor: Mt. Adams Center - National Fire Plan Grant.
Position Overview:
The Youth Corps Assistant Team Leader will lead a team (ages 17-19). The team will assist Trout Lake residents in protecting their homes and property from wildfires. In addition to delivering "Firewise" education information and conducting home risk assessments the team will help property owners trim trees, remove brush and create fire breaks.
Responsibilities:
- Serve under the direction of the program director and field team leader. Assist in leading a field team of 8 local youth. Serve as a vital communication link between the Mt. Adams Center staff, program director and Youth Team members.
- Lead team to conduct fuel treatment i.e. brush removal, cutting lower limbs of trees, planting fire resistant shrubs, raking debris and stacking brush.
- Contact homeowners about the firewise wildfire prevention program, conduct home assessments, and schedule crew service time.
- Coordinate project logistics and scheduling on daily basis.
- Drive a four-wheel drive vehicle with a trailer and operate chain saws and power machinery as needed.
- Organize project related paperwork, including timesheets, project reports and receipts.
- Provide leadership and support for the team members on a daily basis.
- Promote a sense of community, collaboration and cohesion among team members.
- Develop, participate in, and motivate a diverse, hardworking team.
- Analyze projects for safety considerations; train members in appropriate safety practices.
- Attend and complete all NWSA/AmeriCorps training and service requirements including orientation, trainings, team meetings and national service days.
- Complete and submit all necessary NWSA/AmeriCorps paperwork and reports in a timely manner.
- Wear an NWSA uniform and/or appropriate identifiers and required safety gear while performing service or attending official events.
Qualifications:
- Must have a valid driver's license, clean driving record and ability to provide documentation.
- 21 years of age or older, at beginning of service term.
- U.S. citizen, national or lawful permanent resident.
- Possession of a high school diploma or equivalent, or commit to earning one prior to receiving an education award.
- Ability to commit to the full term of service for which they are applying.
- Must successfully pass a fingerprint criminal history background check provided through NWSA and/or Project Sponsor Agency.
- Regular and reliable attendance.
- Have not previously served 2 terms in an AmeriCorps*State or National program. Members may serve up to 3 terms in a National Service Program, but only 2 terms may be within an AmeriCorps*State or National program. Members are only eligible for an education award for their first 2 terms of service, regardless of the type of term (full or part-time) and regardless of the successful completion of that term.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience operating chain saws, power equipment and hand tools.
- Construction experience.
- Demonstrated leadership ability.
- Evidence of successful experience with similar programs and/or job functions. These may include: working with groups of youth or adults, field team projects, or volunteer service.
Compensation:
- A total taxable living allowance (before taxes) of $2012.
- Upon successful completion of a term of service, eligible members/leaders receive an education award of $1,000.
The education award can be used to repay qualified student loans, for further education in an accredited institution of higher learning, vocational or trade schools. The education award is taxed in the year that it is used. - Loan forbearance (after successful completion of a term of service, AmeriCorps will pay the accrued interest on qualified loans, which is taxable).
- Assistance in securing housing as needed.
Transportation Information:
1. Personal vehicle is recommended to get to service site.
2. Project site is not accessible by public transportation.
