Earthworks is a nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting communities and the environment from the adverse impacts of mineral and energy development while promoting sustainable solutions.

Earthworks stands for clean air, water, and land, healthy communities, and corporate accountability. We work for solutions that protect both the Earths resources and our communities. Earthworks has a primarily-remote staff of over 40 employees.

About the Deputy Director job:

This position reports to and partners closely with the Executive Director to create and achieve an organizational development vision that optimizes organizational health and sustainability and develops implementation strategies and measures of success. The Deputy Director leads by overseeing strategic planning, philanthropy, finance, operations, and human resources, including advising and supervising team leads in these areas, all through a lens of anti-oppression.

The ideal candidate will work across departments and bring leadership expertise, advance organizational effectiveness, and practice intersectionality in the organization. The Deputy Director will work actively in support of direct reports and their teams to develop SMARTIE goals, track progress toward goals, and increase the effectiveness and efficiency of leaders. The Deputy Director will oversee the following areas:

Strategic Planning

  • Supports the Executive Director in developing Earthworks vision, strategic goals, and identifying strategic opportunities for the organization.

  • Leads the process and develops the framework for Strategic Planning by enabling staff to construct SMARTIE (Strategic, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, Timebound, Inclusive, and Equitable) goals, strategies, and activities.

  • Works with team leads to establish benchmarks to track progress towards goals over the course of the year and ensure consistency in expectations throughout the organization.


  • Provides strategic guidance to the Philanthropy team on organizational fundraising priorities and growth opportunities.

  • Oversees and collaborates with the Philanthropy Director and Philanthropy team to develop organizational funding strategies, goals, and metrics for measuring progress that enable Earthworks to achieve its mission and strategic plan goals.

  • Ensures that the Philanthropy team has the resources it needs to operate effectively and meet its goals.

  • Ensures that the Philanthropy team is effectively collaborating with the program and Finance teams to manage the requirements of foundation grants and other restricted income sources.

  • Facilitates strategic collaboration between the Philanthropy and Communications teams in developing and implementing strategies to advance Earthworks marketing, branding, and supporter acquisition and engagement efforts.

Finance and Operations

  • Oversees the Finance and Operations Director to provide sound financial management of the organizations budget and finances.

  • Collaborates with the Finance and Operations Director in creating the organizational, team, and program budgets and assists as needed with income and expense management.

  • Ensures that the Finance team, in collaboration with the Philanthropy and program teams, is tracking and reporting expenses for grants and other restricted income sources accurately and in compliance with grant and gift agreements.

  • Maintains the operational needs and functions of our virtual organization as well as our Washington DC based headquarters and our 2 satellite offices.

HR and Organizational Health

  • Optimizes operational systems, processes and policies, management reporting, information flow, and process improvement.

  • Works closely with the Director of Talent and Equity to lead Earthworks Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning processes, individual performance management, compensation processes, and assists with HR needs.

  • Ensures that there are sufficient resources for organizational health built into the organizational budget.

  • Supports the Director of Talent and Equity to ensure compliance with applicable laws, address legal issues, and contract review.

  • Ensures that interdepartmental requests are communicated and resolved in a timely manner to internal and external parties.

  • Supports Board and committee meetings as required.

Required Experience:

  • At least 7 years of experience in management and operations; previous non-profit experience preferred

  • Significant experience advancing equity as a mission-critical facet of senior leadership, including substantial employee engagement; inclusive behaviors and organizational culture; identification, coaching, and management of equity-related competencies and skills in the workplace; and recruiting a workforce that is diverse by gender, race, class, and sexual orientation, among other important group identities

  • Excellent organizational, coaching, and leadership skills

  • Demonstrated track record of excellence or a commitment to learning and growth in each of the following technical, leadership and relational skills:
    • Operations and project management in a non-profit environment

    • Financial management and budget development

    • Legal compliance

    • Utilizing technology for HR systems (ATS, HRIS, etc.)

    • Comfortable with Mac operating system, Microsoft Office Suite, and Google Suite

    • Strategy to action planning, tracking and reporting.

    • Leading an organization to make progress toward goals

    • Decision-making process development, implementation, and improvement

    • Staff supervision, overseeing team supervision, and ensuring performance accountability while managing cross-functional teams

    • Understanding of philanthropy and prior experience with fundraising are desirable

  • Outstanding verbal and written skills in the following: communication, emotional intelligence, conflict resolution, and interpersonal relationships and dynamics

  • Knowledge of how race, racism, class, classism, gender, sexism, power and privilege, and related equity issues show up in the work of mission-driven organizations and their programs and experience helping organizations progress on their journey to become more equitable and inclusive.

  • Exemplary ethical standards, discretion, and an excellent track record of managing confidential matters and developing trust with colleagues at all levels

  • Experience managing up, and supporting leadership decisions with an awareness of how they impact staff throughout the organization

  • Empathy, with a strong ability to listen, give and receive constructive feedback

  • Ability to work effectively both independently and in collaboration with others, anticipate and solve problems, and make sound recommendations for improvements

  • Experience creating strong relationships on teams with remote staff

Location, Travel & COVID-19:

Location for this position is remote. Some travel will be required when air travel and in-person meetings can safely resume as public health conditions permit. Compensation and Benefits:

The salary range for this position is $150,000 - $155,000 annually. Earthworks provides full-time staff with a competitive package of benefits, including employer-paid medical, vision, dental, life, and disability insurance.
