Description
Delaware County Soil & Water Conservation District (DCSWCD) works with the NYC Department of Environmental Protection and a variety of government agencies and not-for-profit organizations to protect the watersheds that host the NYC drinking water supply.
The District is a political subdivision of the State of New York whose legal mandate is to provide for the conservation of the soil and soil and water resources of the state, for the control and prevention of soil erosion, preserve natural resources, assist in flood control, assist in the drainage of agricultural lands, prevent impairment of dams and reservoirs, assist in maintaining the navigability of rivers and harbors, preserve wildlife, protect the tax base, protect public lands, and protect and promote the health, safety and general welfare of the people of the State (excerpted from NY Soil Conservation Districts Law).
Position Overview:
The hired Student Conservation Association (SCA) intern will assist Delaware County's Stream Cooridor Management Program (SCMP) and partnering watershed stakeholder groups to extend information about the District's programs and projects, opportunities for community participation, and individual stewardship activities. The intern would help organize public meetings and events, individual landowner site visits, voluteer groups, prepare outreach materials such as pamphlets, fact sheets, how-to guides etc. The intern would work with District program staff in the production and duplication of teaching materials and assembly of information for publication on the local web sites.
Responsibilities:
Specific tasks would include: a) assisting with development of an outreach program to local communities and individuals to provide stakeholders with a better understanding of natural stream function, the importance of floodplains and their function, and the importance of streamside buffers; and b) organization of local stream events such as a Watershed Festival to educate the public and/or stream clean-up days.
The SCA administers this position and hired members may need to assist with infrequent service projects.
Qualifications:
- Major: Environmental Education, Environmental Science, Natureal Resource Management, Extension Education, Social Sciences, or related major.
- Degree required: BA/BS/MS
- Fields of Interest/skills: Graphic design, Web communications, Writing, Community organization, Public speaking, Computer Science.
- Other Information/requirements: Previous experience computer software such as MS-Publisher, MS-Work, MS-Excel, MS-Powerpoint, Adobe Illustrator & Photoshop, web site/Blog application managment, valid NYS driver's license.
Compensation: $1485 per Month plus and AmeriCorps education award at the end of the term ($4750)
