Description
The Alaska Trails Project Coordinator will work with the Alaska Trails Board, SAGA, the University of Alaska Cooperative Extension Service, and other agency and organization partners to create the Volunteer Training Program for Alaska Trails, which involves the training of trainers and volunteers in a standardized format with trail design, construction, and maintenance techniques. This individual will modify existing curriculum, with the assistance of professionals, to create a module-based curriculum for Alaska's volunteers.
In addition, the individual will work with Alaska Trails to implement additional programs, including the coordination of IMBA trail visits in the summer, membership drives, website support, public relations efforts, and press releases as time is available. First Aid/CPR skills will need to be acquired, if not already, prior to completing summer trainings (among other specific, basic trails safety skills). Alaska Trails will work closely with the AmeriCorps member to acquire these skills.
General Responsibilities (to include, but not limited to):
1. Work with Alaska Trails Board to hold an "expert workshop" and create Alaska Trails Champion program
2. Test and modify existing curriculums in accordance with expert review.
3. Develop, schedule and hold initial "Train the Trainer" workshops
4. Complete and submit all necessary SAGA/AmeriCorps paperwork and reports in a timely manner.
5. Attend and complete all SAGA/AmeriCorps training and service requirements including orientation, trainings, team meetings and national service days.
6. As time allows, provide assistance to the Alaska Trails Board to publish the Alaska Trails quarterly newsletter.
Requirements:
1. 18 years of age or older, by completion of the program.
2. U.S. citizen, national or lawful permanent resident.
3. Possession of a high school diploma or equivalent, or commit to earning one prior to receiving an education award.
4. Ability to commit to the full term of service for which they are applying.
5. Attend infrequent evening and/or weekend meetings .
6. Submit to a criminal history background check.
7. Regular and reliable attendance.
Qualifications:
1. Ability to communicate with a broad range of groups and individuals. (Required)
2. Functional knowledge and experience with trail construction and use of hand tools, and demonstrated love for the outdoors. (Required)
3. Good ability to listen and record (Required)
4. Experience working with volunteers and non-profits (Preferred)
5. Prior experience with teaching, education, and outreach. (Preferred)
6. Experience with writing, review, and research skills. (Preferred)
Member (1700/hr) Benefits Include:
1. A taxable, monthly living stipend (before taxes, approximately $1000/month for members).
2. Upon successful completion of a full term of service, eligible members receive an education award of $4,725. The education award can be used to repay qualified student loans, for further education in an accredited institution of higher learning, vocational, or for trade schools. The education award is taxed in the year that it is used.
3. Loan forbearance (after successful completion of a term of service, AmeriCorps will pay the accrued interest on qualified loans, which is taxable).
4. Basic medical insurance (covers members only, not dependants; vision and dental not included).
5. Childcare allowance for those who qualify.
