Description

The Urban Forestry Intern plays a special role for Casey Trees in the communities in which s/he will work. Because tree planting and stewardship activities require input from representatives of many different organizations, an ability to work with varied organizations and individuals is essential.

Project activities the summer interns will be involved in include:

  • serving as a team leader and mentor to four area high school students - providing guidance and supervision during project activities,
  • verifying information in the Casey Trees street tree inventory,
  • preparing planting sites (including species choices and site selection),
  • planting and maintaining street trees (including mulching and watering)
  • performing outreach to the communities in which you work, and
  • documenting project activities, including short weekly reports and a more substantial final report at the end of the summer.

During the first weeks of the internship, interns will participate in intensive training events provided by staff and outside professionals to gain skills needed for working effectively in urban forestry and in the community. Training events will include topics such as community forestry methods, planting and maintenance techniques, and inventory methods. With this skill base interns will begin working on project activities throughout the city. Learning opportunities will continue throughout the duration of the summer as interns apply new knowledge and techniques gained during the formal training sessions.

Qualifications:

Skills in community organizing, forestry, landscape architecture/design, and restoration ecology are highly desired. However, most important is a willingness to learn and follow staff direction; to engage citizens and work hard alongside them; and to maintain a positive spirit. As outreach and documentation are integral components of this program, excellent communication and writing skills are required. Applicants must be able and willing to endure full days of hard work outdoors, rain or high heat.
