The Friends of Van Cortlandt Park (FVCP) is a nonprofit organization that in partnership with the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation (NYC DPR) is committed to supporting the conservation and improvement of Van Cortlandt Park through educational and stewardship programs. Van Cortlandt Park contains 1,146 acres of forest, wetlands, lake and open space with over 15 miles of trails.

In 2009, the Friends hired the New York/ New Jersey Trail Conference (NY/NJTC) to complete a Trails Plan for various hiking trails in the Park. We will begin implementing this plan in 2010 with a new Trails Crew who will be led by the Trails Project Supervisor and occasionally be assisted by our high school interns and volunteers. During Phase 1 of the Trails Plan, projects will be completed on the John Muir Nature Trail and the Cass Gallagher Trails.

Position Overview:

The Friends of Van Cortlandt Park seeks to hire a Trails Project Supervisor to lead a 4 member Trails Crew along with occasional groups of high school interns and volunteers to complete projects in Phase 1 of our newly created Trails Plan. This position requires a high level of responsibility in preparing for and managing day-to-day operations of this project. The Trails Project Supervisor will find this to be a professionally, intellectually and physically engaging yet challenging position working on valuable trail and conservation projects.

The Trails Project Supervisor will work closely with the FVCP's Executive Director, NYC DPR Staff and NY/NJTC Staff to ensure that projects are completed in an accurate, timely and safe manner. This position reports to the Executive Director of the Friends of Van Cortlandt Park. This is a temporary position from mid- March to November 2010.

Responsibilities:

  • Recruit, hire, train and supervise 4 seasonal crew members
  • Prepare and manage day-to-day schedule for Trails Crew projects
  • Coordinate with NYC Department of Parks and Recreation and New York/ New Jersey Trails Conference to complete projects in Phase 1 of Trails Plan
  • Project planning and management: determine human resources and materials needed to accomplish trail projects and set regular project completion goals
  • Foster a safe, positive, open, professional and motivating environment for project site workers
  • Continually enhance expertise in trail restoration and construction techniques, crew management and leadership

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications/Skills:

  • Minimum of 3 years experience leading trail crews on a variety of trail reconstruction and construction projects including the construction and maintenance of the following: tread and drainage, stone and timber steps, turnpikes/ causeways and erosion control devices
  • Proven ability to perform the duties of a trail worker
  • Strong leadership skills
  • Ability to manage logistics and problem solve with direct supervision
  • Strong, professional communication skills
  • Ability to follow instruction without close supervision
  • Knowledge of hand and power tool use and care
  • Ability to lead volunteer groups including adults and high school students

Desired Qualifications/Skills:

  • Trails Project Supervisor
  • Bachelors degree, in a related field
  • Certified Class B Sawyer
  • Plant pruning skills
  • Experience operating small equipment, such as skids steers and tractors
  • Knowledge of overhead rigging systems and griphoist safety
  • First Aid and CPR
  • Ecological Restoration, revegetation and trail obliteration

Compensation: The Friends offers competitive non-profit salaries dependant on experience

Work Schedule: The weekly work schedule will be 35 hours/ week with some weekend hours required during spring and fall. Position runs from mid-March to November 2010.
