Description

Over the past 30-years, the Evergreen State College has operated a five-acre organic farm located on our 1,000 acre forested campus that serves as a site for hands-on teaching and where students gain experience in small farm operation. Part of The Evergreen State College's farm is also dedicated to faculty and student research, plus we encourage research collaboration with local farmers on their farms. Student internships on farms and with related organizations are also an important part of sustainable agriculture at the college.

Position Overview:

We seek a broadly trained agroecologist with demonstrated expertise in organic agriculture in the Pacific Northwest. This full-time position involves planning and teaching sixteen-credit, team-taught, interdisciplinary programs and carries the expectation of teaching applied agriculture on a regular basis.

Responsibilities:

Within applied agriculture teaching, faculty are expected to be able to integrate academic topics with a weekly farm practicum during the fall, winter and spring quarters. The academic component is expected to support the practicum activities and deepen students' understanding of agricultural sciences, ecological, economic, and social sustainability of agriculture and food systems, small farm planning and business development. The 20-hour per week practicum activities would be coordinated with the farm manager.

Qualifications:

The successful candidate will have a genuine curiosity and enthusiasm for teaching and learning in an interdisciplinary environment, as well as a demonstrated excellence in undergraduate teaching. Teaching the scientific foundations of agriculture and having the ability to engage students in both qualitative and quantitative research methods, are critical.

The successful candidate must have hands-on small farm, marketing and business experience (including the writing of business plans), as well as understanding of the practical, economic, cultural, or social contexts in which agriculture is embedded. In addition, the successful candidate will demonstrate a strong interest in collaborating with statewide institutions/organizations and local farmers to promote sustainable agriculture and local food production in our region.

Although the candidate will be hired for expertise in the advertised opening, they will also have the opportunity to teach in other areas of the curriculum on a regular basis. We also encourage applicants who have had experience teaching and/or working with students from underrepresented populations.

Minimum Qualifications:

· A Ph.D. in the agricultural sciences; for example agroecology, sustainable agriculture, soil ecology, plant health, plant breeding for organic/integrated system or related disciplines;
· field experience in the Pacific Northwest in either applied agricultural field research and diversified, small-scale organic farming;
· experience in business, marketing and small farm planning;
· previous teaching experience.

This is a Regular Faculty position, eligible for continuing appointment after 2, 3-year renewable contracts. All requirements for this position must be completed by the end of academic year 2008-09. Review of complete applications begins January 8, 2009 and will continue until finalists are selected.
