The Town of Portola Valley, a small rural (population 4,500) community located 5 miles west of Stanford University in the foothills of San Mateo County seeks a highly organized and enthusiastic Intern to assist with the Town's sustainability-related efforts.
Position Overview:
The Sustainability Program Intern will perform a variety of duties in support of programs related to energy and water conservation. The primary assignment will be assisting the Sustainability & Resource Efficiency Coordinator and Sustainability Committee with implementation of a residential energy and water efficiency program, with additional opportunities to work on diverse programs.
The Intern will help develop program materials, set up tracking systems and coordinate trainings and other events. This internship is an ideal opportunity to learn about a local government approach to sustainability and greenhouse gas emissions reduction.
Qualifications:
Effective team player who is able to prioritize and work independently with minimal supervision. In addition, the successful candidate will be able to communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing, and have demonstrated skill in detail-oriented work. The successful candidate must also demonstrate knowledge and interest in environmental issues, energy conservation programs and sustainability planning.
Fluency with Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint required; experience with Adobe Illustrator or InDesign a plus. Ability and desire to work effectively with community members is essential.
Open to students and non-students. Candidates must have completed or be currently enrolled in a Bachelor's or Master's degree program in urban, regional, or environmental planning, environmental studies, ecology, or a closely related field; volunteer or work experience related to sustainability highly desired.
Compensation: This is an unpaid internship. We are seeking a commitment of at least 15 hours per week for 3 to 6 months. Work hours are flexible, but most work will be completed between 8:30 - 5 p.m. weekdays. There will be opportunities to attend and participate in evening and/or weekend meetings and give community presentations.
