USU will develop appropriate systems for managing environmental, social, and economic sustainability programs with specific goals and objectives. This policy supports the goal of the USU statewide system to prepare students, faculty, and staff to proactively contribute to a high quality of life for present and future generations.

Position Overview:

Utah State University (USU) is currently seeking qualified candidates to fill the position of Sustainability Coordinator. The Sustainability Coordinator will promote a superior culture of environmental sustainability throughout the University Community and will act to facilitate advancement of the sustainability goals of the institution. The coordinator will stay current on sustainability issues, contemporary events, new opportunities, and transformations in the direction of environmental sustainability. The Coordinator is an ambassador for the University's Sustainability program and will represent USU efforts and interests nationally, collegiately, and locally.  

Responsibilities:

  1. Act as the Facilities Department liaison to the Campus Sustainability Council, supporting and helping to develop Council goals in all facets of campus Environmental Sustainability. Work jointly with Council representatives and appropriate Facilities personnel to facilitate and report on University Sustainability initiatives, goals, and objectives. Supports the 3 over-arching objectives of Sustainability; Economy - Environment - Equity.
  2. Execute or assist on reporting requirements of AASHE (Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education), to include ACUPCC (American College and University President's Climate Commitment), STARS (Sustainability Tracking, Assessment & Rating System), the Five Year USU Sustainability Plan, and the USU CAP (Climate Action Plan). Prepare an annual USU Environmental Sustainability Report.
  3. Attend annual AASHE, State, and local conferences, seminars, meetings, etc. as an USU representative. Perform speaking engagements at new student orientation and in USU classrooms to showcase University Sustainability accomplishments, ongoing projects, and future goals. Coordinate with off-campus students and city personnel to advance sustainability outside of main campus. Seek out presentation and publication opportunities with AASHE and other associations, and at conferences where Sustainability is a theme or a primary focus area. Benchmark with other university sustainability programs to share information, supplement professional knowledge, and to add or improve on USU sustainability programs.
  4. Prepare, publish, and distribute education and marketing information as well as to perform marketing initiatives promoting environmental sustainability values and practices among faculty, students, and staff within the campus community. Chair quarterly group meetings with Facilities representatives to exchange information and to coordinate continuing sustainability initiatives, identify new opportunities that need more specific attention, and ensure that all Facilities sustainability initiatives are being reported in annual reports. Works with all Facilities operations' groups to assess and recommend improvements to environmentally sustainable practices.
  5. Perform campus outreach, to include creating and/or facilitating student environmental sustainability projects, host an annual environmental summit, and develop other programs that advance campus sustainability awareness and participation. Facilitate outreach to USU Regional campuses to promote system-wide sustainability, coordinating and sharing resources with local sustainability advocates.
  6. Seek out grant and other in-kind opportunities available to colleges and universities to advance energy efficiency, recycling, and other sustainability initiatives. Work with appropriate Facilities professional personnel on grant opportunities located in their areas of Facilities.   

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree - multiple fields accepted. Public Administration, Architecture or Environmental Design, Business, Marketing, Journalism, English, History, or Engineering are preferable.
  • 3-5 years work-related experience.
  • Requires advanced written and oral communication skills and project/process management skills. Intermediate analytical, computer/technical skills are required.
  • Work is normally performed in an interior/office work environment. No or very limited physical effort required. No or very limited exposure to physical risk.
