~ The Community Services Department provides a variety of programs and services that are valued by our residents and enhance the quality of life in El Paso County. ~ 

El Paso County lies in east central Colorado and encompasses more than 2,158 square miles – slightly more than twice the area of the state of Rhode Island (excluding Narragansett Bay).

The natural physical beauty of the area, situated at the base of Pikes Peak and with an uninterrupted view of the Front Range, can be enjoyed by all. The magnificent scenery inspired Katharine Lee Bates to write the poem “America the Beautiful” after her visit here. The mild climate, on average, supplies 285 days of sunshine, 15 inches of rain, 35 inches of snow, and very low levels of humidity.

Position Overview

The Community Services Department of El Paso County, Colorado is currently seeking a Seasonal Summer Nature Camp Assistant.

Responsibilities

  • Assists in organizing and conducting nature day camps to promote understanding, appreciation and protection of natural areas.
  • Prepares for and leads daily craft and environmental education projects in nature day camps.
  • Assists with staff or volunteer-led interpretive programs and presentations, to include hikes and other outdoor/indoor activities.
  • Provides public information and roving interpretive services; greets visitors and receives incoming calls, orients the public to regional parks/trails and provides natural and/or cultural history information.
  • Supervises group activities; ensures children are accounted for at all times. 
  • Sets clear expectations and ensures safety of all program participants. 
  • Assists with various special projects/events on the behalf of the Recreation & Cultural Services Division as needed.
  • Sets up and maintains cleanliness of facilities.
  • Performs other duties as required.

Qualifications

  • Experience working with children/youth in day camps preferred.
  • Knowledge of regional natural and cultural history preferred.
  • Ability to stimulate interest and lead students in various interpretive activities.
  • Ability to lead, plan, organize and implement program activities.
  • Ability to effectively monitor and ensure the safety of children.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, volunteers and the public.
  • Ability to assume assignments and complete them with adequate results.
  • Ability to use various computer programs, including word processing, databases and desktop publishing software; Microsoft Office proficiency preferred.
  • Maintain regular and punctual attendance.
  • Must pass conditional post offer background investigation and drug screen.

Work Conditions:

  • Work is performed in an indoor environment and outside in the field in inclement weather conditions.
  • Field work may involve negotiating undeveloped, transverse, rugged terrain.
  • Required to work Saturdays; may be required to work occasional evenings. 
  • This is a temporary position that will not exceed five (5) months.
