Environment Now is currently seeking motivated students interested in environmental issues and advocacy to partner with our team as Summer Interns.
BACKGROUND:
Environment Now (EN) is a private foundation created in 1989 by Frank and Luanne Wells. Environment Now's mission is to be an active leader in creating measurably effective environmental programs to protect and restore California's environment. Since inception, EN's focus has been on critical issues near the hearts of Californians and our founders: preservation of coasts and waterways, improved forest management, and the reduction of air pollution and urban sprawl. As an activist foundation, EN directly engages in key issues affecting California's environment alongside our program partners.
INTERNSHIP DESCRIPTIONS: EN's Internships aim to provide Interns with valuable and substantive educational and professional experience as well as exposure to a wide wage of environmental issues.
EN is seeking candidates for summer internships with our Freshwater and Sustainability Programs. All Interns will develop and improve their research skills and will be exposed to current environmental issues, regulations, and litigation. In addition, Interns will have various administrative responsibilities related to program work. Internships may be applied toward school credit, if applicable. Qualified Interns may be considered for permanent staff positions as opportunities become available in the future.
Specifically, Intern responsibilities will include:
1) FRESHWATER PROGRAM INTERN: The Freshwater Intern will work directly with the Water Programs Director to conduct research and analyze freshwater supply issues facing California. The Freshwater Intern will gain exposure to the many facets of California water policy. Specificially, the Intern will learn about: Bay Delta restoration efforts, water rights, water transfers, groundwater management, and both urban and agricultural water use efficiency. At the end of the internship, the Intern will understand how legal and grassroots advocacy can strengthen environmental protection and improve water resource management. The Freshwater Intern's primary responsibility this summer will be to contribute to EN's work to secure a sustainable water supply for Southern California.
2) SUSTAINABILITY PROGRAMS INTERN: The Sustainability Intern will work directly with the Sustainability Programs Director to conduct research and analyze sustainability issues facing Southern California, especially the greater Los Angeles area. The Sustainability Intern will learn about: air quality, transportation and land use policy; environmental laws relating to Clean Air Act conformity and air planning and investigate the housing-employment disconnect; At the end of the internship, the Intern will understand the challenges facing our growing region and how environmental advocacy and litigation can help shape the outcome. The Sustainability Intern's primary responsibility this summer will be to contribute to EN's work toward a sustainable urban environment.
3) RESEARCH INTERN TO THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR: The Research Intern to the Executive Director will work directly with the Executive Director to research and analyze various issues addressing the environmental movement and activism, especially the greater Los Angeles area. In particular, the research will focus on new areas of development for the organization, policy concerns and government agencies, and emerging markets and technology solutions for environmental problems.
The purpose of the work will be to develop Environment Now's programs, address concerns in the Southern California environmental movement, and support speaking and writing on critical issues in the environment. At minimum, the Intern will learn will understand the myriad organizations and agencies addressing the major issues in Southern California's environment.
QUALIFICATIONS: Successful Intern candidates will have the following:
* Undergraduate degree in public policy, urban planning, environmental science, or law. Some graduate level work is preferred.
* Additional knowledge, interest, or study in a related issue area (freshwater or coastal or air quality or environmental law) is preferred.
* Strong analytical and writing skills
* Proficiency in research using multiple databases
* Working knowledge of Microsoft Office programs
* Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
* Positive energetic attitude
* Willingness to learn and desire to solve environmental problems
EXPENSE STIPEND: Summer Interns should be able to volunteer approximately 30-40 hours a week for 3 months during the summer (approximately from June through August---however, EN will be flexible to accommodate Interns' schedules). Interns will be provided a stipend of $500.00/per month to help defray their expenses.
