Description
Environment Now is currently seeking motivated students interested in environmental issues and advocacy to partner with our team as Summer Interns.
BACKGROUND:
Environment Now (EN) is a private foundation created in 1989 by Frank and Luanne Wells. Environment Now's mission is to be an active leader in creating measurably effective environmental programs to protect and restore California's environment. Since inception, EN's focus has been on critical issues near the hearts of Californians and our founders: preservation of coasts and forest and a reduction of air pollution and urban sprawl. As an activist foundation, EN directly engages in key issues affecting California's environment alongside our program partners.
INTERNSHIP DESCRIPTIONS: EN's Internships aim to provide Interns with valuable and substantive educational and professional experience as well as exposure to a wide wage of environmental issues.
EN is recruiting candidates for two summer internships to assist our Freshwater and Coastal Programs. All Interns will develop and improve their research skills and will be exposed to current environmental issues, regulations, and litigation. In addition, Interns will have various administrative responsibilities related to program work. Internships may be applied toward school credit, if applicable. Qualified Interns may be considered for permanent staff positions as opportunities become available in the future. Specifically, Intern responsibilities will include:
1) FRESHWATER INTERN:
The Freshwater Intern will work directly with the Water Programs Director to conduct research and analyze freshwater supply issues facing California. The Freshwater Intern will learn about: environmental water policy, especially as it relates to the Bay Delta, water rights, and water transfers; environmental laws relating to water supply; and innovative local programs to conserve water resources in Southern California. The Freshwater Intern's primary responsibility this summer will be to contribute to EN's work toward a Sustainable Southern California.
2) COASTAL INTERN:
The Coastal Intern will work with the Water Programs Director to conduct research and analyze various coastal issues throughout the state. The Coastal Intern will learn about California's waterkeepers and will assist in researching new waterkeeper opportunities. In addition, the Coastal Intern will assist with research and development on the impacts of seawater desalination plants in California.
QUALIFICATIONS: Successful Intern candidates will have the following:
* Undergraduate degree in public policy, urban planning, environmental science, or law. Some graduate level work is preferred.
* Additional knowledge, interest, or study in a related issue area (freshwater or coastal) is preferred.
* Strong analytical and writing skills
* Proficiency in internet research
* Working knowledge of Microsoft Office programs
* Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
* Positive energetic attitude
* Willingness to learn and desire to solve environmental problems
EXPENSE STIPEND: Summer Interns should be able to volunteer approximately 30-40 hours a week for 3 months during the summer (approximately from June through August---however, EN will be flexible to accommodate Interns' schedules). Interns will be provided a stipend of $500.00/per month to help defray their expenses.
APPLICATION PROCESS: Interested candidates should send a cover letter, resume, and brief writing sample (no more than 3 pages) either by email or fax to Jill Gravender by March 24, 2006. Candidates should include their preference for the type of Internship (freshwater or coastal) in their cover letter.
