Description
Carolina Mountain Land Conservancy (CMLC) seeks a full-time Stewardship Director. CMLC is a local nonprofit working to create and actively care for a regional network of permanently protected farm, forest, parks, natural lands, and water resources in Henderson, Transylvania and parts of neighboring counties. Since 1994, the organization has permanently protected more than 23,000 acres.
Responsibilities:
Under the direction and supervision of the Administrative Director, the Stewardship Director maintains the following responsibilities:
Administrative:
- Ensure CMLC's Stewardship Program meets national Land Trust Alliance Accreditation standards through policy review and adherence as well as accurate record-keeping;
- Coordinate and serve as staff liaison to the Stewardship Committee in order to address ongoing landowner requests/concerns and potential violations of easements and management issues at CMLC-owned properties;
- Hire and supervise AmeriCorps members, interns, and/or volunteers involved in stewardship activities;
- Work with Administrative Director and Finance Department to appropriately budget for and fund stewardship programs and track stewardship endowment and legal defense funds;
- Attend bi-monthly Board of Trustees meetings, annual membership meeting, fundraisers and other events;
Easement Properties:
- Implement/oversee the annual easement monitoring program and all record-keeping and related follow-up activities for 80+ easements;
- Complete or arrange for completion of baseline documentation reports for conservation easement projects, including GIS mapping;
- Maintain communication with conservation easement landowners and build relationships through outreach, education, and land management support;
- Engage volunteers in support of the easement monitoring program;
Fee Simple Property Management:
- Develop and implement long-term management plans and annual operational plans for fee simple properties;
- Work with AmeriCorps members to develop and maintain volunteer Preserve Management Teams and to host volunteer work days;
- Involve members and community in active enjoyment of fee-owned properties;
Trails:
- Work with Trails Coordinator to manage existing and developing trail systems
Landscape Level Stewardship:
- Develop beneficial relationships with resource-related professional in the community;
- Work with Executive Director and Land Protection Department to identify and prioritize properties for protection and restoration;
- Lead special programs and projects advancing landscape-level stewardship objectives such as invasive species control and habitat restoration.
Qualifications:
The qualified candidate will possess:
- At least 3 years demonstrated experience in the field of conservation or natural resource management;
- A degree in natural resource management, environmental science or related field;
- Commitment to the mission and values of the organization;
- Exemplary writing, speaking, and presentation skills;
- A strong work ethic;
- Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team;
- Energy, creativity, and initiative
Compensation: This is a full-time position, which provides competitive pay commensurate with experience; health insurance and retirement benefits; supportive and engaging work environment with opportunities for professional development. Some evenings and weekends required.
