Restoration Project has successfully advocated to save sea turtles worldwide
since 1989; SPAWN, the Salmon Protection and Watershed Network, protects
endangered coho salmon in West Marin; and our growing Shark Conservation Program

Position Overview
Turtle
Island seeks a full-time experienced attorney to manage our ocean and salmon programs.
This position will advocate for the protection of marine life from threats
including overfishing, climate change, offshore oil drilling and plastic
pollution, and work as part of a team using law and advocacy to reform destructive
practices that are imperiling our oceans.
This position reports directly to the
Executive Director, and will work closely with ocean protection and salmon
conservation and communications staff based around the country. The Staff Attorney & Program Director will
work onsite at our
headquarters in West Marin County near Point Reyes National Seashore.
Responsibilities
Key Job Functions:
- Develop campaigns to further the goals of Turtle Island
Restoration Network’s key programs; - Litigate cases that will result in greater protection for marine
species and habitats throughout the United States and internationally; - Manage litigation docket and liaise with outside attorneys
currently representing Turtle Island (Stanford Environmental Law Clinic,
EarthJustice, Center for Biological Diversity, private attorneys, etc.); - Effectively move administrative and legislative policies for
marine conservation through scientific and legal comments, oral testimony,
policy analysis, petitions for rulemaking, and effective communications; - Conduct media in collaboration with communication staff,
including writing press releases, media strategy and outreach, and delivering
effective statements to reporters; - Engage Turtle Island supporters, the public and opinion leaders
to protect the oceans through campaign activities such as public speaking,
rallies, action alerts, opinion editorials and direct outreach; - Assist with grant opportunities to grow programs; and
- Seek and manage pro bono assistance, interns and volunteers to expand
our reach.
Qualifications
Education and Experience:
- Juris Doctor degree, California bar and environmental law
experience preferred. - Familiarity with environmental laws such as the Endangered
Species Act, Clean Water Act, National Environmental Policy Act, Marine Mammal
Protection Act, Magnuson-Stevens Act and others. - Excellent writing, communication, research and oral advocacy
skills. - Proven ability to develop cases and manage dockets.
- Experience consistently meeting internal and external deadlines,
and producing finished products on time. - Experience planning and implementing environmental or advocacy
campaigns. - Strong work ethic and time management skills.
- Ability to work independently and as a part of an effective
team. - Scientific literacy and background in marine or environmental
science is preferred. - A demonstrated commitment to environmental protection.
Compensation: Salary is commensurate with experience
and comparable to other nonprofits.
