Position Overview  

Earthjustice is seeking a Staff Attorney to join its Alaska Regional Office. The attorney selected for this position will focus on litigation and other advocacy advancing the protection of the Alaska's natural heritage and the people who depend on it.

Responsibilities 

  • Conduct factual investigations and develop legal theories for possible advocacy or litigation work; draft pleadings and briefs; manage new and existing cases in state or federal courts and administrative tribunals.
  • Supervise the work of lawyers, interns, and litigation assistants in a litigation team.
  • Manage relationships with co-counsel, clients, and coalition partners.
  • Integrate communications and other advocacy into far-reaching, high-impact litigation strategies. 

Qualifications 

  • Law school graduate admitted or willing to apply for admission to the Alaska bar.
  • At least six years of legal experience.
  • The ability to manage a litigation docket.
  • Experience in administrative agency proceedings and federal and state court litigation, especially litigation involving review of agency action, and including appellate practice.
  • Superb research, analysis, writing, and oral advocacy skills.
  • Initiative, good judgment, and a strong work ethic.
  • A commitment to public interest work and a passion for Earthjustice's mission.
  • Ability to work independently and in collaboration with others.

Current work of the office includes the protection of the Alaska coastal rain forest, protection of the Arctic Ocean and other sensitive areas in northern Alaska from oil and gas development, conservation of the Bering Sea and Gulf of Alaska marine ecosystem, wildlife conservation, air and water quality enforcement, national park and other public lands management, and protection of lands and waters from mining activities.

Our clients include national, regional and local conservation organizations, traditional Alaska Native tribal organizations, ecotourism businesses, and communities, as well as other organizations concerned about enforcing the law to protect the environment. The Staff Attorney may be housed in either the Juneau or the Anchorage location of the Alaska Regional Office.
