Staff Attorney

Communities for a Better Environment (CBE) is a California environmental health and justice organization that combines grassroots organizing, legal advocacy, and science-based research to achieve its goals. CBE's mission is to build power in urban communities of color and low-income communities to achieve environmental health and justice by reducing pollution and building healthy and sustainable communities. The legal department focuses largely on energy (both encouraging alternative energy and phasing out fossil fuel dependence) and establishing more effective and sustainable local land use and air pollution regulation.

CBE seeks applicants for a Staff Attorney position in its Oakland office. The position is full-time, beginning immediately.

Responsibilities:

• Prosecute environmental Lawsuits in state and federal courts on behalf of CBE;
• Represent CBE at Hearings in courts and before various administrative agencies responsible for enforcing federal, state, and local environmental laws;
• Engage in public education and outreach to promote CBE and CBE's legal work;
• Attend community meetings with CBE staff and members;
• Supervise CBE interns.

Qualifications:

• At least 3 - 6 years relevant legal experience, including litigation experience;
• California Bar Membership;
• Working knowledge of California and federal environmental law;
• Demonstrated commitment to environmental justice;
• Excellent legal writing and public speaking skills; Spanish language skills preferred;
• Willingness to travel in California and work frequent evenings and some weekends;

Compensation: Commensurate with other California legal non-profits.
