KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Senior Software Engineer will have a demonstrated record of leading software development projects and will have extensive hands-on programming experience. Candidate must be able to work independently and also within a small development team. Primary responsibilities for this position include:

- Senior member of the software development team responsible for system architecture, design, and implementation of a new infrastructure for enabling Internet access to biodiversity data in a distributed database environment.

- Re-engineer NatureServe's data exchange process to allow automated, incremental synchronization and taxonomic reconciliation between the central database and each local node's database.

- Develop WSDL compliant Web Services software components to provide the facility for NatureServe to respond to third party application requests.

- Serve as the primary technical liaison with a collaborating project team from the University of Massachusetts - Boston that is developing an Access Control Agent to support XML-based management of user authentication and rights enforcement.

- Coordinate the activities of a Technology Working Group, consisting of a team of technologists from NatureServe data centers that have expertise in online data delivery.

- Create hand held data collection tools to enable field level collection of survey data.

QUALIFICATIONS:

General Skills:

- 5 years experience with developing enterprise data management solutions

- Expertise with large-scale data management solutions including the following: Warehousing/Mining, Distributed Databases, Replication, Data Transformation

- Experience transforming requirements into design

- Experience using Open Source technologies in deployed solutions

- Extensive knowledge with full product lifecycle methodologies including the following: Planning, Design, Architecture, Documentation, Testing

- Experience developing n-tier solutions

- Excellent verbal and written communication skills

- Familiarity with and commitment to NatureServe's mission to preserve biological diversity

Required Technical Skills:

- 5+ years experience with Java

- 2+ years experience with XML/XSLT

- 5+ years experience working with relational databases including SQL and Oracle; Strong understanding of data modeling - not DBA level; Stored Procedures

- 1+ years experience with Web Services technologies including the following: SOAP, UDDI, WSDL

Pluses:

- 2+ years experience with J2EE

- 2+ years experience with UML

- 2+ years experience with GIS technologies: experience with geodatabases, vector and raster spatial analyses; Programming with the ESRI ArcObjects library; GIs-based enterprise solutions (SDE, Geodatabases)

- Experience with WebMacro

- Experience with Visual Basic
