Position Overview: 

This role will serve as a focal point, internally and externally, for SPBO (Specialty Plastics Business Organization)-related sustainability opportunities.  The main geographic scope will be North America, but it is expected that the individual will serve as a global liaison for SPBO sustainability by: regularly interfacing with regional sustainability teams, participating on key corporate & regional sustainability efforts, and sharing best practices/insights to develop a global perspective on the impact of this mega trend on SPBO's business.

Sustainability is a rapidly changing, dynamic mega trend that is expected to have a significant impact on SPBO's business for the foreseeable future.  We are putting this new position into place in order to have a focal point in the business to develop a stronger understanding of the opportunities and threats sustainability presents us, develop a strategic approach to proactively address it, and help quantify the strategic choices in value propositions across SPBO's key markets. 

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct effective, in-depth discovery discussions with customers on LCAs (Life Cycle Assessment), RICs (Resin Identifcation Code), Eastman sustainability initiatives, etc. that result in actionable outcomes for the customer and for Eastman
  • Develop a clear understanding of the sustainability trend by integrating multiple sources of information, both primary (customer discovery sessions, voice of the customer data, attendance at conferences, etc.) and secondary (published information, industry announcements, published reports, etc.), and share key insights with appropriate internal audiences (business, market segment teams, technology, regions, corporate initiatives) to help drive strategic decisions and actions
  • Member of each SPBO Market Segment Team as the sustainability focal point, responsible for ensuring segment teams consistently evaluate threats and opportunities due to sustainability and ensuring integration of sustainability strategy to address identified threats and opportunities
  • Identify growth opportunities and work with marketing teams to build a strong portfolio of sustainability enabled or enhanced stage gate projects.
  • Participate on and potentially lead the SPBO Sustainability Team to drive strategic decisions and actions, including the development of a sustainability strategy and external communication plan for the BO and to ensure alignment with Corporate sustainability efforts
  • Help SPBO market segment teams quantify the sustainability drivers and barriers in value propositions
  • Contact for key sustainability-related industry organizations/forums to advocate SPBO positions, monitor trends in sustainability and competitive activity, and identify potential partnership opportunities
  • Conduct quarterly reviews with cross-functional team on potential opportunities to ensure that insights are being leveraged fully
  • Lead cross-regional SPBO efforts to leverage value propositions and opportunities and interface as appropriate with regional SPBO Sustainability Teams
  • SPBO interface for LCA requests and information sharing
  • Interface with other Eastman teams that are focused on sustainability (Corporate Sustainability, other projects) to ensure alignment and to develop a view of the corporate impact of this trend
  • Works closely with marketing communication to ensure consistent messaging on sustainability

Performance Measurements:

  • SPBO portion of corporate goals for sustainability of the growth portfolio
  • Effectiveness of EVEs (Economic Value Estimation) in value propositions defining sustainability growth levers
  • Percent revenue from new product launches that are sustainably advantaged compared with prevailing  alternatives in the marketplace.
  • Number of LCAs that are tied to value propositions, either within Eastman or the customers' EVEs

Qualifications:

Required Degree / Education:

  • BS Technical Degree or MBA

Required Experience:

  • Minimum of 10 years' experience in commercial, marketing, or technical roles

Required Travel:

  • Up to 50% travel will be required for this position

Specific Skills/Experience Desired:

  • Demonstrated marketing experience or acumen
  • Demonstrated technical experience or education
  • Market development, application development, or strategic/solution selling experience preferred
  • Working knowledge of sustainability and its impact on the plastics industry
  • Working knowledge of plastics industry (applications, decision makers, buying process, needs)
  • Knowledge of plastic processes (EBM, Injection Molding, Extrusion, etc.) and plastic materials
  • Presents visions/strategies/ideas/proposals in an effective manner
  • Strong collaboration skills
  • Creative and strategic mindset
  • Market analysis experience preferred
