Background:
The Wild Salmon Center's mission is to understand and protect the wild
salmon ecosystems of the Pacific Rim. Our goals are to improve our
understanding of salmon ecosystem function and to protect the world's
most important salmon strongholds in a series of salmon sanctuaries.
We have offices and staff in Oregon, Washington, Moscow, and the
Russian Far East.
Duties:
- The slide archivist intern will perform data entry and maintain the Wild
Salmon Center's slide archive. - The slide archive is a research/image
resource for Wild Salmon Center. - The primary functions of the collection are
to supply visual records to trace the health and history of salmon and
salmon habitats and to preserve images used to produce research reports,
brochures, pamphlets, and posters. - Focusing on slide archival practices, the
intern would be responsible for entering slide images of Pacific Rim
salmon/salmon habitats into FileMaker Pro 5, scanning images, and labeling
slides.
This 1-2 day/week position will be based at The Wild Salmon Center
headquarters office in the Jean Vollum Natural Capital Center ("the
Ecotrust Building"), one of the world's foremost example of green
building and design, in the heart of the Pearl District in Portland.
Colleagues and co-workers are a group of motivated salmon
conservationists from the United States and Russia.
Qualifications:
- Strong candidate will be a college student with a
background in both information management and strong environmental
aptitude or experience. - A small amount of Russian ability would be highly
desirable. - Some familiarity with FileMaker Pro 5, as appropriate, is expected.
When: 1-2 days per week. This is not a one-time job, but will have to be
maintained over time. A minimum commitment is one semester or 4 months.
