SIMoN Program Director

The SIMoN Director will oversee the day-to-day operations of the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary’s Sanctuary Integrated Monitoring Network. They will be responsible for developing monitoring priorities in consultation with Sanctuary staff and regional researchers, leading a request for proposal process to select monitoring projects, integrating monitoring results with resource management decision making, and expanding SIMoN as a model for other sanctuaries. The incumbent will be responsible for understanding monitoring programs around the nation to build their successful components into SIMoN.

Funding for SIMoN is through a variety of sources, and the SIMoN Program Director will continually pursue funds to maintain and augment the program. They will work closely with and under the direction of the Monterey Bay Aquarium Director of Research and Conservation and Research Coordinator for the Monterey Bay National marine Sanctuary. This position is funded by the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, through the Monterey Bay Sanctuary Foundation in an annual contract to the Monterey Bay Aquarium.

Must possess a graduate degree in biological or physical sciences; knowledge of monitoring programs to support resource mgmnt issues; exp. in conducting marine ecological fieldwork in the north-east Pacific; skill in building collaborations in research, & interagency cooperation through the use of interpersonal skills, negotiation, & partnering;ability to motivate members of, & effect. work in, a team of employees with a variety of occupational fields; ability to communicate effectively both orally & in writing with local, state, & federal agencies, advisory groups, media & other concerned groups interested in marine monitoring information; familiarity with formal & informal science education strategies, & desire to pursue innovative ways of sharing information; administrative, contract, & budget tracking skills; ability to assess experimental designs & monitoring data trends; knowledge of Title III of the Marine Protection.
