Ambri, an energy startup commercializing an innovative battery technology first developed at MIT, is seeking a Senior Test Engineer to support the roll out, ramp, test and validation of Ambri’s DC system product.

Position Overview:

Ambri is seeking an individual to be a key member of the Ambri Advanced Manufacturing Engineering team. The Senior Test Engineer position requires working collaboratively with other engineering disciplines to design novel solutions to complex utility scale energy storage challenges using Ambri’s LiquidTM Metal Battery technology.  The individual in this role will be called upon to support efforts by the design team in their prototype and pilot build/ assembly of integrated systems.  The Senior Test Engineer will be responsible for working in conjunction with other disciplines (Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Firmware Engineering) as Ambri drives to test and validate system performance. The Senior Test Engineer will work with the Product Safety and Compliance Engineering team to run safety test and compliance for Ambri’s LiquidTM Metal Battery technology.

Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for the development of manufacturing test processes for new product introduction and initiatives. To be based on engineering specification, including PFMEA, Statistical process control (SPC) and new test equipment development.
  • Battery cell characterization and qualification, battery string module design validation and verification, and root cause failure analysis to support product development and new technology development.
  • Develop automated data collection and data processing for battery manufacturing test and quality control.
  • Set-up test articles and perform qualification and characterization testing on battery cells and battery string modules including but not limited to life cycle testing, power testing, and thermal uniformity testing.
  • Author testing specifications for complete test coverage of design features utilizing data-driven methods and accuracy analysis techniques.
  • Develop electrical design specifications for vendors to manufacture and test battery pack components. This includes printed circuit boards, PCB assemblies and battery packs.
  • Develop standard operating and safety procedures for testing cells and battery strings
  • Build a knowledge base and contribute to the growth of Ambri expertise of the current technical state of battery cell and module testing.

Requirements: 

  • Bachelors Degree in Mechanical or  Electrical Engineering
  • Experience with battery core technologies or battery management systems is a plus (hardware, software, and firmware)
  • 5-10 years of experience developing electronics or manufacturing test equipment for mass production products with an understanding of testing techniques needed to test mixed signal (analog and digital) modules such as battery packs.
  • Strong understanding of battery cell characteristics
  • Experience with Arbin, Maccor, or similar battery testing systems is desired
  • Demonstrated ability to write scripts using higher level programming scripting languages such as python, C, C • for automating test equipment
  • Familiarity with automated test station platforms such as LabVIEW
  • Understanding of CANbus/Modbus and familiarity with battery safety certification is a plus.
  • Knowledge of battery concepts including State-of-Charge (SOC), State-of-Health (SOH) and cell balancing.
  • Familiarity with working with high voltage and currents and safety practices related to them.
