Position Overview:

This position will be in the Design and Engineering Services division within Southern California Edison's (SCE) Customer Service Business Unit (CSBU). The successful candidate will focus on conducting cutting-edge research and technology evaluation/assessment projects in support of the Codes & Standards, Emerging Technologies, Energy Efficiency & Demand Response, and HVAC programs.

Responsibilities: 

Typical responsibilities will include:

  • managing and conducting high visibility scientific laboratory research and field demonstration projects and contracts in the field of HVAC, refrigeration, lighting, plug loads, and Zero Net Energy (ZNE), including developing scope, schedule, and budget;
  • performing quality assurance for all laboratory projects to ensure compliance with required scientific rigors;
  • developing technical reports, written procedural manuals, guides, and training curriculum;
  • providing leadership and direction in the engineering and economic analysis of new technologies;
  • developing proposals (including budget recommendations) for new energy efficient (EE) and related technology assessments;
  • providing training, direction, and/or supervision to other engineers in the areas of refrigeration, control systems, advanced lighting systems, plug loads, ZNE, and space conditioning systems;
  • interfacing with and presenting results to various stakeholders, including regulatory commissions, rule-making bodies, industry professionals, and all levels of management;
  • developing instrumentation design, test methods, and protocols, and managing/maintaining a centralized equipment instrumentation library;
  • and performing other responsibilities and duties as assigned.

Qualifications: 

Basic Qualifications:

Must have a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or Physics and a minimum of 12 years of engineering experience or a Master's Degree in Engineering or Physics and a minimum of 10 years of engineering experience or a PE License and 8 years of engineering related experience. Must have a California Professional Engineer's License. Demonstrated experience in analyzing building energy systems, energy efficient technologies, and demand response strategies.

Core Competencies:

  • Typically possesses 12 or more years of engineering research experience.
  • Demonstrated experience conducting recent laboratory research, including utilizing scientifically viable experimental methods, numerical modeling, and instrumentation/calibration of apparatus.
  • Demonstrated experience applying concepts of heat transfer, thermal and power cycles, controls, computational fluid dynamics, and energy systems design and modeling to engineering activities.
  • Demonstrated experience in programming and operating data acquisition systems.
  • Demonstrated experience with whole building energy simulations, field demonstrations, and building commissioning.
  • Demonstrated experience in developing test methods and procedures.
  • Demonstrated experience in using and programming LabView software in support of test projects.
  • Demonstrated experience working with HVAC systems and Commercial and Industrial Refrigeration.
  • Demonstrated experience managing projects, including developing and maintaining scope, schedule, and resources.
  • Demonstrated experience working with projects/programs in consulting with key stakeholders and managing contracts and relationships with regulatory organizations.
  • Demonstrated experience producing technical or engineering reports and presentations.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of buildings' energy systems and integrated demand side management programs (i.e., Energy Efficiency and Demand Response).
  • Demonstrated experience using Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access.
  • Must demonstrate the ability to integrate work across relevant areas, develop the business and services to enhance customer satisfaction and productivity, manage risks and safety appropriately, develop and execute business plans, manage information, and provide exceptional service to internal and external customers.
  • Must demonstrate effective resource and project planning, decision making, results delivery, team building, and the ability to stay current with relevant technology and innovation.
  • Must demonstrate strong ethics, influence and negotiation, leadership, interpersonal skills, communication, and the ability to effectively manage stress and engage in continuous learning.

COMMENTS: Additional testing may be required as part of the selection process for this position. Priority consideration will be given to employees affected by the SmartConnect Implementation.
