Position Overview:
Under the direction of the Director of Communications, this key position will define strategies and execute an annual marketing plan that supports occupancy goals in our full service lodging destinations, youth and program participation, and publication sales in support of its broader mission of promoting the protection, enjoyment and understanding of the mountains, rivers, and trails of the Northeast outdoors.
AMC Destinations provide high-quality education, safety, outdoor recreation, and conservation services to 75,000 overnight guests annually through its 3 roadside lodges in New Hampshire, 8 high mountain huts in the White Mountains, and 3 sporting camps in Maine's 100-Mile Wilderness.
The Senior Marketing Manager is responsible for development of seasonal promotional campaigns and delivery of all print and electronic marketing materials, including advertising, direct mail, print collateral, web content, and email. The Senior Marketing Manager will work closely with senior managers in our destinations, education, publishing, and merchandising departments in developing campaign messaging, packaging, pricing, and promotion tracking.
This position will also work closely with a broader communications team including public relations, web and e-communications, and member magazine publishing to ensure coordinated execution of integrated marketing strategies throughout the year. While the position has a heavy emphasis on travel, tourism, and program marketing, this position will also provide marketing support to our e-commerce, trails and volunteer programs.
Candidates should have a demonstrated track record of balancing resources across a broad portfolio of products and services. This full time, exempt position is based in AMC's Boston headquarters.
Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement annual marketing plan for key destinations and program areas, with focus on meeting the diverse revenue goals of organization
- Manage overall marketing budget, and allocate spending based on revenue and strategic goals of organization
- Manage staff Marketing Associate as well as outside designers and contractors
- Work with rest of communications team and senior department managers to develop and implement seasonal promotional campaigns in support of AMC destinations and education programs, including messaging, offers, partnership programs, print collateral, and advertising
- Coordinate development of all forms of advertising and collateral materials including print advertising, email campaigns, direct mail and other materials, including developing concepts, messaging, writing, editing and managing the production of the materials
- Work with merchandising manager in planning and executing on promotional programs in support of retail merchandising and e-commerce goals
- Conduct formal and informal market research in support of new initiatives and branding efforts
- Represent AMC at external marketing events such as trade shows and tourism conferences, and maintain working relationships with state tourism agencies and regional marketing partners as needed
- Periodic travel to AMC business offices and facilities in New Hampshire and Maine required
- Other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
- Passion for AMC's nonprofit mission of promoting the protection, enjoyment, and understanding of the Northeast outdoors essential
- Bachelor's degree with at least 6 years of progressively responsible marketing experience in a corporate or nonprofit environment, particularly in successfully managing multiple complex projects simultaneously
- Experience in development of web-based marketing materials and email marketing campaign development and measurement required
- Marketing experience in the travel and tourism industry desirable, with a demonstrated ability to lead and manage large scale initiatives
- Basic experience with web and email production helpful
- Ability to translate target market and message input into fresh and effective design
- Supervisory experience desirable
- Self-starter able to lead projects with minimum supervision
- Understanding of integration of marketing communications and public relations helpful
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, Photoshop, and InDesign preferred, and well as basic understanding of HTML and web content management
- Attention to detail and strong written and verbal communications skills
- A commitment to the quality and accuracy of all marketing materials
Physical requirements:
Work is performed primarily in a general office setting, with minor physical effort or strain required. Work is normally performed while seated, requires freedom of movement. Must be able to stand, sit, walk, climb stairs and operate standard office equipment. May spend extended periods of time at a computer terminal, on a telephone, or operating other office machines. This position requires an ability to work in a fast-paced, sometimes stressful environment and manage deadlines. Work environment involves only infrequent exposure to disagreeable elements. Ability to travel safely in the backcountry in all weather conditions carrying up to 30 pounds of gear is preferred.
