NeighborWorks America is a national nonprofit organization created by Congress to provide financial support, technical assistance, and training for community-based revitalization efforts.

Position Overview:

This is a highly responsible professional position within the National Initiatives and Applied Research (NIAR) division of NeighborWorks America. The position will provide efficient and effective initiative and relationship management to the corporation and its network of community development organizations. This position is responsible for managing a broad initiative that focuses on corporate sustainable business practices, and on delivery of healthy, sustainable real estate development, home buyer education services, and community-based programs to low- and moderate-income communities through the NeighborWorks America network.

The position will require team work, self-motivating energy, and outreach skills to help develop, manage, and implement the multiple strategic objectives of NeighborWorks® America's Green Agenda.

Responsibilities: 

Select specific responsibilities include:

  • Acting as corporate Green Champion and team member of real estate and community stabilization initiatives;
  • Advancing, developing, advising, tracking, and implementing Green business and community development initiatives for the corporation and its network of charter-member, independent nonprofit organizations. Areas of focus for green activities include business operations, home buyer education, real estate development and rehabilitation, energy efficiency retrofit, and community revitalization.
  • Acting as liaison with NeighborWorks Training division to support education activities to educate the community development industry homeowners on green practices;
  • Advancing corporate efforts to reduce its carbon footprint;
  • Managing green components of NeighborWorks grant making activities;
  • Producing reports on progress of NeighborWorks and its Green Agenda;
  • Managing external relationships with key partners around green activities;
  • Planning symposiums, workshops, and other dedicated forums to inform and influence the community development industry; and
  • Supporting development and communications on efforts to promote and convey understanding of NeighborWorks® America and its Green efforts and to seek outside financial support for the effort.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Generates ideas, innovates and contributes regularly to overall strategic development and tactical planning for Green.
  • Manages and conducts analyses of performance and makes recommendations for improved effectiveness and efficiency.
  • Manages ongoing Green programs, including grant making efforts, and other special projects.
  • Develops and prepares measurement tools and reports that establish progress on initiative.
  • As necessary to carry out projects, forms and convenes teams and working groups within the Division and throughout the corporation.
  • Develops long- and short-term strategies and projects and implements activities to advance such efforts under the Green initiative.
  • Manages internal teams, external consultants, and vendors to achieve outcomes for the Green initiative,
  • Conducts independent research and analysis of issues and topics pertinent to the Green initiatives, as well as other special projects, and makes recommendations to corporation.
  • As appropriate, makes and maintains relationships with staff, national partners of NeighborWorks® America, and non-profit organizations.
  • Conceptualizes, researches, writes, and edits materials, such as presentations, articles, speeches and background papers, which advance the green initiative work of the Corporation and network.
  • Writes and analyzes reports on the activities of Green initiative, and other special projects.
  • Produces regular evaluations and project updates for audiences ranging from supervisors to partner organizations
  • Works closely with key NeighborWorks® America staff and NeighborWorks® organizations to support resource-development efforts related to programs.

Secondary Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Develops and tracks initiative-specific budgets, with assistance from administrative staff.
  • Participates in inter- and intra-departmental meetings on matters important to NeighborWorks® America's visibility and resource-development goals; participates in cross-unit teams as assigned.

Qualifications:

Graduate degree, preferably in planning, community development or public policy, with 7 or more years of experience in housing / real estate development, sustainable development, or community development; or bachelor's degree with 10 or more years of experience in housing, project management, finance, sustainable development, or community development; or equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the following knowledge, skills and abilities: Demonstrated ability to achieve outcomes for complex, multi-dimensional programs that necessitates working across departments and with personnel not in reporting line.

Demonstrated experience in green, sustainable policies and real estate practices required; knowledge of sustainable business practices a plus.

Need to demonstrate ability to manage complex initiatives with multiple constituents.

  • Excellent writing and editing skills, oral communication abilities and presentation skills
  • Strong analytical skills and considerable knowledge of the affordable housing and community development field and sustainable development
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Ability to organize, prioritize and coordinate multiple work activities in a fast paced team environment to meet critical deadlines and ensure high quality work products.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully meet deadlines
  • Maintain regular and timely attendance
