Position Overview:
SAIC's Climate Change Practice seeks to hire a Senior Energy/Utilities Engineer (Senior Engineer) who has extensive experience in the power/utility sector in addition to expertise quantifying and evaluating greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and reductions resulting from energy-related activities.
The Senior Engineer will work on a variety of climate change related projects for both public and private sector clients. The Senior Engineer is a full time, exempt position within SAIC's Climate Change Practice, and will report to the Director of Climate Change Services, Western Region. Some business travel may be required.
Responsibilities:
The Senior Engineer will work on a variety of climate change projects. The job responsibilities include at least the following:
- Conduct energy audits and site visits to clients' operations
- Quantify energy related GHG emissions, reduction measures and offset projects including utility scale energy programs
- Conduct engineering cost/benefit analyses, including estimation of payback periods, NPVs, and IRRs for emission reduction measures and projects
- Evaluate technological options for energy management
- Develop energy feasibility studies
- Prepare energy efficiency analyses
- Forecast energy related GHG emissions over time
- Model energy scenarios
- Manage client projects, including SAIC personnel, subcontractors, project budgets and schedules
- Advise clients on energy management solutions
- Collaborate and brainstorm with cross functional teams (water, waste, air quality) within SAIC to pursue waste-to-energy projects, water and energy projects, etc.
- Understand, digest and summarize local, state and federal energy regulations that directly impact voluntary and regulatory action on climate change
- Write technical proposals and project reports
Qualifications:
A successful candidate will have a background in power generation, energy management, facilities management, utility operations, and/or energy consulting.
More specifically, candidates must have the following skills, at a minimum:
- B.S/B.E in Engineering -- Mechanical, Electrical, Environmental -- or related field (facilities management, energy management, etc.). Advanced degree preferred.
- At least 8 years of direct energy/utility work experience; direct power plant/utility and consulting experience preferred. LEED accredited professional, a plus.
- Comprehensive understanding of the power sector, including Demand Side Management, power generation, cogeneration, distributed generation, power and industrial sector energy efficiency, thermal storage, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) technologies, carbon capture and storage, renewable energy, biogas and end-use technologies.
- Broad knowledge of energy management strategies within facilities (HVAC, lighting, process loads, etc.).
- Knowledge of energy regulations in California and nationally.
- Experience with energy analyses including electricity, fossil fuels and renewable energy.
- Ability to identify, analyze and recommend energy conservation and GHG reduction measures for facilities (or utility scale programs).
- Proven GHG emission and offset quantification skills.
- Experience with cost estimation, including estimation of NPV and IRR.
- Energy modeling skills are a plus.
- Excellent technical writing skills.
- Strong communication skills; exceptional writing skills are required.
- Ability to self-motivate and work independently as well as in a team.
- Proficiency using all Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook, Powerpoint, Project). Advanced Excel skills are preferred.
