World Wildlife Fund (WWF), one of the world's leading conservation organizations, seeks an experienced senior copy and content editor with the talent and skill to edit effectively for a wide variety of content styles and provide occasional writing and research as needed.

Major Functions

 

The Senior Copy and Content Editor provides extensive copy editing, content editing, and proofreading across a variety of mediums, as well as occasional writing and research as assigned. They are responsible for editing to ensure that WWF's many teams, platforms, and channels craft and communicate their key messages clearly and without error, while adhering to WWF's mission, brand, and communications strategy. The copy and content editor reviews text for clarity, tone, grammatical correctness, and consistency, while always keeping in mind the pertinent objectives of the piece, its specific audience, and the particular needs of the medium through which the message will be expressed. They edit to ensure quality, alignment with other WWF products and messaging, and compliance with established brand and editorial style standards.

 

Full-time in-person, hybrid, or full-time remote work options are possible for this position.

 

Responsibilities

Copy editing, content editing, proofreading, and occasional research and writing as assigned by CS, in a variety of formats including print, digital, video, web, and social media. Products include, but are not limited to, World Wildlife magazine, the annual report, a high-end calendar, PSAs, marketing and development materials, event-related promotional materials, e-newsletters, program reports, brochures, and photo captions and credits.

  • Tailors communications to a variety of different audiences, channels, and media, taking care to avoid a “one size fits all” editing mindset.

  • Develops/maintains a clear and consistent editorial brand voice and ensures that content conforms to WWF style and standards.

  • Updates WWF-US Editorial Style Brand Guidelines on an annual basis and communicates new style decisions and trends to WWF staff.

  • Maintains current knowledge of changes in English language usage, including the latest in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) standards, and consults with other teams on language and style decisions as needed.

  • Updates the Inclusive Communications Toolkit in cooperation with Internal Comms.

  • Conducts online research and fact checks, as needed, to collect/confirm content.

  • Project management role on select projects, developing schedules and communicating regularly with the CS creative project manager for the duration of the project.

  • Partners with the Creative Projects Manager the hiring official in the hiring of freelance writers and editors by interviewing, testing, orienting to WWF style, and evaluating their initial work, as needed.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in communications, journalism, English, or a related field.

  • Exceptional skills in copy editing, content editing, proofreading, and writing.

  • Minimum of 6 to 8 years of professional experience in editing of marketing, development, and informational materials.

  • Ability to translate complex concepts and dense writing into easily understood language.

  • Ability to assess a product's tone and purpose and tailor copy appropriately.

  • Ability to copy edit across different formats and for a number of audiences—everything from program strategy documents meant for colleagues, to magazine feature stories, to marketing and communications materials designed to influence donors, foundations, nonprofits, government, businesses, and the general public.

  • Familiarity with the Chicago Manual of Style; some familiarity with the AP Stylebook.

  • Demonstrated interpersonal communications skills, including diplomacy, patience, and the ability to collaborate with a variety of clients.

  • Ability to work in a creative, fast-paced, deadline-driven team environment and remain flexible, organized, and nimble in the midst of multiple rounds of review and shifting priorities.

  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects.

  • Proficiency in using the Macintosh operating system, Microsoft Word, Adobe Acrobat Pro, Adobe InCopy, and PowerPoint required.

  • Familiarity with—or facility for easily learning—project management and collaborative tools such as Airtable, Zoom, Trello, Workzone, Sharepoint, and OneDrive strongly preferred.

  • Prior experience editing for nonprofit or conservation/environmental organizations a plus.
