Position Overview:

Working in concert with the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), we have a position for a Biologist who will work essentially as Caltrans staff on a full-time employment basis, for a minimum of a year, and will be based with the Caltrans environmental office in Fresno. The Biologist will work under the supervision of a Caltrans Senior Environmental Planner and will perform a variety of complex professional tasks to communicate and assess the effect of transportation projects on natural resources.

The work would include preparation of biological reports on all types of transportation projects, including those with complex or extensive impacts. Other tasks could include, but are not limited to, performing and evaluating database and literature searches, performing construction monitoring, protocol-level surveys and field surveys for special-status plant and animal species, developing biological mitigation and monitoring reports, preparing permit applications, preparing and/or reviewing biological reports and visual displays and directing individuals or teams responsible for preparation of biological studies.

Depending on the applicant's qualifications, this position may also include lead responsibility for coordinating the environmental process for selected projects and for independently managing consultant contracts.

Responsibilities: 

  • Bachelors' degree in Biological Sciences with a concentration in animal biology, plant biology, ecology, fisheries management or wildlife management.
  • 3+ years of experience in environmental analysis and planning, research or evaluation of natural science elements preferred. A doctorate degree in one of the natural sciences above may be substituted for the 3 years of experience and a master's degree in one of the natural sciences, defined in education above, may be substituted for 2 years of experience.
  • Knowledge of various governmental organizations as they relate to environmental planning and methods and techniques of evaluation of environmental impacts and GIS/GPS technologies.
  • Proficiency in local, state and federal regulations pertaining to endangered species and environmental protection.
  • Ability to coordinate environmental planning, research, and analysis of proposed projects.
  • Adapt and apply formal natural sciences methods and principles to planning problems of an applied practical nature. Gather and analyze data and prepare written reports and visual displays.
  • Ability to hike in uneven terrain up to 5 miles per day.
