General

SustainAbility is a London-based company that has recently set up an office in Brooklyn, New York. The company specializes in helping private businesses understand and respond constructively to the challenge of sustainable development. We combine working as consultants with alternative means of influence through our research and campaigning work. Ultimately our goal is to:

* Convince companies themselves to make substantive and long-lasting commitments to becoming more sustainable enterprises.

* Influence underlying drivers promoting more sustainable business behaviour (e.g. customer pressure, NGO campaigns, government action).

The successful candidate will be asked to participate in a wide-range of SustainAbility's activities. A brief job description is provided below.

SustainAbility Client, Research, and Campaign Projects: 40% of Total Time

Highest responsibility is the management of key client programmes.

The successful candidate will play a key role in working with clients and other SustainAbility team members in formulating and delivering strategies aimed at moving companies towards sustainable development.

Key tasks will likely include:

* Principle client interface - Primary Responsibility

* Project design

* Proposal development

* Funding negotiations

* Selection of and co-ordination of project team

* Oversight of project time and financial budget

* Ensuring quality and timeliness of project delivery (e.g. reports, presentations)

* Project follow-up (including design of new business opportunities)

* Dissemination of learning from project to Core Team and Network.

Other responsibilities in this area include working as a project team member, providing project support and input to ad hoc projects managed by other SustainAbility team members.

In addition to the focus on developing consultancy work, the successful candidate will also have the opportunity to become involved in other non-client focused work. This may include participating in the development of our research and think-tank work as well as in SustainAbility's campaigning activities.

Currently the think-tank work includes programs researching the interface between governments and corporations in the development of public policy (JANUS), the role of corporate boards in helping companies address the challenge of sustainability (TRIMARAN) and several others. The suggested balance between client, research, and campaign projects is:

* 70% Client

* 30% Research & Campaigns.

Internal: 30% of Total Time

Internal management skills are another key competence that applicants will need to exhibit. SustainAbility's US operations are currently growing, and are expected to continue to grow steadily for the foreseeable future. In particular, the successful applicant will be asked to:

* Participate in monthly management meetings;

* Help more junior members of SustainAbility's Core Team (and interns, associates) to develop professionally.

* Work with other members of SustainAbility's management teams in developing and implementing strategy for the organisation.

* Help co-ordinate the US office's day to day operations.

* Build Core Team knowledge base by sharing knowledge and learning through project work

New Business Development: 20% of Total Time

In addition to working with existing SustainAbility clients, the successful candidate will also be involved in developing new business opportunities for the company.

Responsibilities will include developing and strengthening SustainAbility's overall business offering, including:

* identifying and designing new areas of client services and/or research areas;

* identifying the need for and developing new Team skills and competencies: and,

* identifying and developing new business partnerships and alliances.

Outreach: 10% of Total Time

SustainAbility core team members are in great demand as speakers and as authors for external publications addressing sustainability issues. The successful candidate will also be asked to provide support in presenting at conferences as well as writing articles for publication.

Key responsibilities will include:

* Speaking and presenting at conferences, workshops and seminars

* Writing articles for publication

* Developing and nurturing press contacts, particularly for areas of business managed.

Other Information

* This position is a full-time position (37.5 hrs/week) and will be based in our Brooklyn offices.

* The salary range is between $55,000 and $75,000 depending on experience.

* The successful candidate will have access to SustainAbility's range of benefits which includes five weeks of paid holiday and health insurance. Other benefits, including share options and pension contributions are available after twelve months of employment.

Person type:

* Educated to at least Masters level in a relevant discipline.

* Previous work experience of at least 4-5 years in a related business or activity (e.g. work with non-governmental organisations, government or business to help the business community respond to the challenge of SD).

* Previous management experience of small teams.

* Excellent writing and communication skills.

* Proven IT skills ¡V particularly e-mail and Word, with Excel and Powerpoint an asset.

* Team player, flexible, efficient, supportive, reliable, and eager to learn.

* Willingness to work in New York City.

* A knowledge of languages and an international outlook would also be assets.
