Position Overview
Stillwater Sciences is seeking a seasonal wildlife biologist to support various field efforts throughout the greater Bay Area. This is a temporary on-call position, based out of Berkeley, California, projected to run from April through September 2015, with the potential to be extended based on future project needs.
Responsibilities may include wildlife monitoring, pre-construction surveys, construction compliance monitoring, and habitat assessments. This is a temporary seasonal position. Field efforts may be scheduled on short notice and field personnel will need to confirm their availability or unavailability for a given field effort on short notice. Applicants need not be available for every field effort.
Responsibilities
Depending on the project, the wildlife biologist may be responsible for:
- Construction monitoring for wildlife as part of permit compliance
- Recording and entering data into databases, and performing quality control checks
- Maintaining good communication with field lead or project manager
- Surveys of wildlife and wildlife habitat; amphibians, stream flows, fish habitat, water quality, plants
Qualifications
Qualified applicants should possess:
- A minimum of a BS or BA in biology or natural resource field
- Experience conducting habitat assessments and special-status wildlife species surveys in northern California
- Excellent wildlife identification skills, preferable with a technical specialty such as birds, herpetofauna, or small mammals
- Experience identifying common local woody and herbaceous plant species in northern California, and familiarity with California vegetation community types
- Experience conducting biological impacts analyses and developing avoidance/minimization and mitigation
- A general understanding of regulatory permitting and environmental compliance including ESA/CESA, Clean Water Act, CDFW Streambed Alteration Agreements, and NEPA/CEQA
- Attention to detail and commitment to sound science
- Good attitude and willingness to work outside in all types of weather and terrain
- Excellent navigational skills
- Ability to work as part of a team
- Endurance to work long days (10- to 12-hour field days)
- Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Access software programs
- Solid navigational skills using maps and GPS
- Excellent writing and communication skills
