Located in the beautiful Santa Ana Mountain foothills, minutes from town but surrounded by fantastic wildlife habitat and open space and 30 minutes from spectacular beaches, the Irvine Ranch Outdoor Education Center is a brand new facility that serves a wide variety of groups with outdoor education programs, retreat facilities, camping programs and other services. Successful candidates will get a broad experience with working with academic and recreation programs.

The position reports to the Director of Outdoor Education.

Responsibilities:

Deliver high quality programs to a wide variety of audiences. 80% of duties performed outdoors.

Specific Duties:

  • Lead groups K-adult on hikes, through
  • Curriculum development for K-adult programs
  • Responsible for knowledge of all information imparted during training
  • Act as mentor to part-time staff
  • Responsible for daytime supervision and safety of program participants
  • Maintain enthusiastic attitude
  • Work evenings and weekends - including lifeguarding, ropes course instruction and other outdoor recreation activities.
  • Provide site security three to four nights per month, including patrolling grounds, locking gates, locking doors and meeting needs of user groups.
  • Manage groups of volunteers
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

As a Seasonal Naturalist, you are required to have: a 4-year degree in environmental science, biology, ecology, education with an emphasis on science, or a related field plus at least 1 year experience working with youth groups. You must be physically fit enough to hike several miles per day with a 25-pound pack. First aid/AED/CPR certified. Completed Youth Protection Training (please inquire for details). Lifeguard certification is a plus.

Compensation:

  • Weekly, daily or hourly pay depending on contractual agreement
  • Shared housing available (please ask for details)
  • Meals when groups are in residence
