Food & Water Watch is a nonprofit consumer rights organization that challenges the corporate control and abuse of our food supply and water resources.
The Science Associate provides scientific advice and justification for Food & Water Watch positions on food issues, including food safety, food irradiation, cloning, nanotechnology, and aquaculture. The Science Associate reports to the Assistant Director.
Responsibilities:
1. Monitor latest research on various food issues. Analyze, synthesize, and present conclusions from large volumes of data from a variety of sources. Review and evaluate legislation, regulations, or other policies.
2. Work with policy and research staff to provide scientific explanation and advice when developing FWW positions on food issues.
3. Prepare reports, petitions, and other documents that outline the latest science or FWW positions to a wide range of audiences.
4. Represent FWW in various settings, including to coalition partners, government agencies, and the media.
5. Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Education: Science degree required.
Knowledge: Familiarity with a range of food policy issues; extensive knowledge of research techniques including online searches, government agency, NGO and academic sources. Familiarity with public affairs, including the legislative and regulatory process and agency structures.
Experience: At least five years of professional research or advocacy experience. Experience working with databases and producing written material that relies heavily on statistics.
Skills: Excellent written and oral communication and computer skills, including proficiency in Word and database programs, excellent analytical skills. Working understanding of statistics. Ability to present highly complex and technical concepts in a readable, concise form for a variety of audiences.
Capabilities: Ability to work well with a wide range of people, work well under pressure, handle multiple tasks at once, and adapt to changing situations on a daily basis.
