Job Description:

The intern's primary project will be to further characterize the riparian buffer zone along 40 miles of the Esopus Creek and its tributaries, using both spatial data and field reconnaissance techniques, paying special interest to areas where riparian / invasive species management can enhance stream stability and further other program goals.

The intern will assist the Esopus Creek Stream Management Plan project team and advisory council with developing riparian management recommendations, including recommendations specifically related to combating further spread of invasive species such as Japanese Knotweed. This work will involve extensive contact with creek side property owners; consulting with other resource and community agencies in the watershed, report preparation, and assisting with/producing educational resources among other things.

Other activities may include: assisting the Project Coordinator and Community Educator with community meetings and events; assisting with data gathering, analysis, and report writing as needed; administrative tasks; and staffing the CCEUC Phoenicia Office to answer visitor questions. 

Agency/Program Description: 

New York City Department of Environmental Protection is charged with protecting the watersheds that host the NYC drinking water supply. The NYCDEP Stream Management Program focuses its efforts in Catskill mountain watersheds that deliver 90% of the water supply. The main tributary of the Ashokan Reservoir in Ulster County, New York, is Esopus Creek - a mountain river that drains approximately 200 mi2 of mountainous, primarily forested terrain. The Program will be developing a stream corridor management plan for the Esopus Creek. 

Major: Environmental Science/Engineering, Watershed Management, Forestry, Geology, Ecology, Hydrology, Botany, Wildlife Management or related field. 

Degree required: BA/BS/MS 

Fields of interest: Riparian Vegetation, Geographic Information Systems, Environmental Science, Watershed Management 

Other information/requirements: Previous experience with GIS and GPS technology and spreadsheet and database applications. Ability to work in mountain streams, good communication and writing skills. Personal transportation is necessary. Desired: plant identification and naturalist skills. Knowledge of Catskill region
