Description

The California Coastal Commission's Public Education Program, in partnership with the nonprofit Tides Center, manages a wetlands education and restoration project at Upper Newport Bay in Orange County.  This project works to restore the coastal ecosystems and critical species habitat of the Upper Newport Bay through the work of community volunteers. 

We are seeking a Restoration Program Assistant to coordinate the native plant nursery and assist at public restoration events.

Position Overview:

This is a part-time position with some weekend work required.  As an employee of the Tides Center, the Restoration Program Assistant is responsible for helping to organize and run aspects of the restoration program of the Coastal Commission's Community-Based Restoration and Education Program. 

Responsibilities: 

Duties include but are not limited to: Plan and lead the collection and propagation of native plant nursery seeds and cuttings.  Maintain the nursery facility, grounds and equipment as necessary.  Recruit, education and train volunteers to complete the tasks of plant propagation.  Aid the organization and leadership of regular restoration programs (monthly ROOTS Events and weekly Steward Days) and any necessary program administrative duties.

Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor's degree or demonstrated equivalent experience in botany, environmental science, biology, horticulture, or similar field required.
  • A working knowledge of the native plants and ecology of Southern California coastal zone required.
  • Experience training, coordinating and leading volunteers strongly preferred.
  • Experience working in a plant nursery setting preferred.
  • Ability to interact well with a wide range of personalities; 
  • Strong organizational skills a must.
  • Ability and desire to work independently as well as part of a team.
  • Customer service attitude.
  • Computer proficiency in Microsoft Office suite.
  • Bilingual a plus.

Compensation: $11.62 - $19.33 per hr., depending on experience.  Approx. 15 hrs/week, limited term (approx. one year) position with potential for renewal based on future funding.
